T42 - Got recovery discs, best way to proceed

#1 Post by detroitslim » Wed Feb 06, 2008 11:01 pm

I got a set of recovery discs for my recently acquired T42, and I'm ready to reformat the hard drive and reinstall what I need.

This seems like a dumb question, but are there any links out there for the best way to manage the process? On another site, somewhere, were some really solid step-by-step directions on wiping and re-installing everything on a laptop, but I can't find the link for the life of me.

Is there a thread that exists around here that walks through the process of using the recovery discs? I've been searching but haven't found anything that specific.

Thanks!

Jeff

OK, one dumb question down, in my browser history, this was the page I was looking for:

http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=78598

It's a step-by-step process of installing windows on a new hard drive, but is this the process I'll follow to re-install from the recovery discs? Or am I overthinking it, and I should just drop the discs in and let it rip?

You are over thinking it. Just pop the boot disc in and grab a cup of coffee- or three.

That is after you have backed up all your necessary personal files from the drive because it will be wiped clean.

One suggestion is to wipe the disk with some sort of erase program. If it is an Hitachi drive, I suggest Drive Fitness Test to erase it.

Thanks so much! And sorry about the dumb question... i got impatient and did exactly what you said, and 90 minutes later, SP2 is starting to install.

Hurrah!

Next up is office, then I'm finally ready to rock!
