1.7 Banias to 1.8 Dothan upgrade....

#1 Post by TOMSrolla » Thu Feb 07, 2008 11:45 pm

is it advisable to do the the above upgrade ?

memory is already upped from 512mb to 2GB and HDD from 7K60 to 7K100 + 7K60 on ultraslim bay drive adapter.

the Dothan 1.8 will be traded in with my 512mb IBM ddr333 memory chip. 8)

Absolutely. If for nothing else, then for doubling the cache. And Dothan 1.8 is a very cool-running, yet powerful CPU.

I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Just my $0.02

Sounds like a great deal. I'd go for it even if you don't get much extra speed with such a modest increase of clock speed. I've changed Banias 1,6GHz to Dothan 2GHz and my T41 started to get pretty hot due to the high clockspeed chip so I think a slower Dothan like that 1,8GHz might actually a better upgrade.

just curious, is the CPU swap just a plug/unplug operation or is it more involved?

Pretty much. After the removal of parts and the CPU ,it just falls right in. You do have to put new thermal grease on though. Took me about 30 mins the first time.

I went from a 1.3 Banias to a 1.6 Dothan and I swear my T40 is slower now.

Shouldn't be slower . Did you benchmark it ?

http://www.passmark.com/products/pt.htm is useful.

Upgrading my T40p from 1.6 Banias to 2.0 Dothan gave >25% speed increase.

thanks for all the inputs and reply...

I just swap the Dothan 1.8 and its plug ang play on the T41p ....

put some Arctic Silver 5 on the Dothan CPU and re-assembled the unit .

operating temp of the Dothan 1.8 = 42 degreees C ....... the Banias 1.7 = 47 degrees C before the swap.

thanks a million for this Forum and I've learned a lot just reading it everyday.... more power

Probably would've been a good idea to benchmark before I swapped the CPU!! :D

It just feels slow sometimes, but perhaps I should just get more RAMMAGE.

If you've only got 512MB then a RAM upgrade is noticeable, also an upgrade from a 4200rpm disk makes a huge diff (try a 7200rpm disk) and finally a CPU upgrade will really trick things out.

I do understand how to make a computer faster, just so you know!

I have a 5400RPM Seagate, and the CPU is already upgraded, albeit a mediocre Dothan.

do you think it would also be possible to put a 2Ghz into a T41p?
I could get one for free .... hmmmm

It has been done, so yes, it is doable. Expect a lot more heat with the speed that you'll gain, though.

so do you think it's worth it? or should i expect some problems because of the heat?
thanks for your reply!
