T5600 CPU in my Z61t problem, I think!

I just found down that its core speed is 997.2 MHz.

I have the problem like this one on another forum

T5600 Super Pi not anywhere close to what it most likely should be
I have a new laptop with the 1.83ghz Core 2 Duo Merom T5600. I tried super pi 2M and im getting 2:08 which even the old 1.83ghz centrino are doing much better than I am.

Is there something not going right. I turned off the CPU performance thing in the bios so that its running at 1.83ghz all the time...

any thoughts?

I've opened the thread, and I'm closing it. I've found down what causes my problem.
Just install the battery, which I took out 'cause I usually have to carry the laptop, then everything works just fine. I have correct scores.

The weird thing is why uninstalling battery causes this problem? If you take the battery out and run with AC power, your laptop will run slower?

This is a BIOS error. T5600 has a Multiplier Range from x6.0(997MHz) to 11(1.83GHz). It will automatically change depend on the computer load. However, if you take the battery out, the laptop keeps working at the lowest Multiplier (x6.0). That means the lowest speed!!!!!!

You can check your laptop! Plz tell me if it happens to you!

I enquired about the exact same problem here -- basically, removing the battery cripples your CPU speed.

Seems to me this is a nasty bug indeed.

I also googled, and I know I'm not the only one.

Please check it if you are using z61t, and don't ask me to change the power management .

The problem has been reported on a multitude of models, not just the Z61t:

It is fair to say it is unrelated to type of processor, operating system, power mgr settings or other software variables. It appears to be a fairly recent occurrence, which would point to a faulty implementation of Speedstep in one of the latest BIOS upgrades.

Other than that, I have no idea. There is no way this "feature" can be intentional, much less useful. This is a serious bug that effectively prevents the machine from being used as a desktop replacement. I wonder what's going to happen when the battery cells are depleted, will I find myself with a laptop running a glorified dual-core Pentium 3?
