T30 Hard drive issue? Help

#1 Post by saucy » Fri Feb 08, 2008 9:18 am

Hi,

I've got a T30 2366-BU4 that's recently run into some issues.

It all started when all of a sudden my screen went blank. At first, I would just hold down the power button and it would boot back up normally. This problem was very intermittent and rarely caused any problems while I was working on the laptop...until a few days ago.

The screen went blank very often and a reboot wouldn't fix the problem. I've found that if I let the computer sit for a while, the screen would turn on normally, but only for a few minutes. When booting, the computer would turn on, I'd hear the fan run..still a blank screen, then nothing..the laptop just shut off.

I also remember that the laptop was noticeably louder while this was occurring and at one point in time (while I was away from the computer, I was told that the laptop made a strange siren..emergency vehicle type of noise).

Sorry for the long post..I'm hoping that this is just a hard drive issue, but I have a feeling that it may be something more serious.

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Get the Hardware Maintenance Manual for your T30 here
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site. ... 39298.html
Open it up, and check the fan for dust bunnies. Worst case, you may need to replace it.
Sounds like the CPU is overheating because of a lack of cooling.

First of all, welcome to the forum!

From what you're decribing, this seems to me as a motherboard problem.

Try pulling out your hard drive and see what happens.

If symptoms persist, try downloading a copy of PC-Doctor from Lenovo website and running it on every component of the system, if the machine stays up, that is.

Try removing media drive and mini PCI card and see whether that makes any difference, along with booting without the battery.

Good luck and let us know.

Thanks for the help..

I removed/reinserted the hard drive..no luck but after doing so I received the 4 cycles of 4 short beeps..does this mean that my motherboard is a goner? Lenovo support says that beep code corresponds to the system board security chip.

I haven't yet had the chance to remove the mini PCI card or take apart the laptop to access the fan..although i did open the cover and blew some dust away/off the fan.

I also tried removing/reinserting my 512 stick of ram..

Thanks
