Does a NEC ND-6500A fit in a A31P?

#1 Post by stingbandel » Sun Nov 28, 2004 6:10 pm

Hi,

I am interested in getting one of those DVD dual layers burner. However, I am not sure if this will fit on my A31p.

Has anybody tried it?

thanks

It looks like it should fit, but you'd have to take the the Ultrabay 2000 connector off the drive you have on your existing cd/dvd drive and put it on the new drive. If you wanted to, you could try for the faceplate if you had to, but the drive itself does fit if you get that far. Mind though you would have to reverse whatever you did to original condition if you claim a warranty on it.

PascaleCamille: What is the exact partnumber of the CD drive from which you took the faceplate?

Did you have to use the rear interface to make it work with your thinkpad?

I am using a NEC 6500 in my A31P. Bought it from Newegg. Also purchased a cheap broken Ultra Bay CD-ROM player on Ebay.

Used the front faceplate and Ultra Bay connector pieces from the CD Rom and it works great.

Faceplate was not a perfect fit. A dremel tool and some superglue took care of it.

Easier method would be just to use the original faceplate, but does not look as good. You will have to use a small knife or a dremel tool to cut out a piece of plastic on the right bottom corner of the face plate to make it fit. Not very hard to do.

All you guys with the NEC drives need to go over to www.cdfreaks.com and then to their forum and check out what all is going on with this drive...firmware upgrades, ability to burn with bit-setting, etc. It's quite amazing and this little burner works well in my T30 to burn DVD's on the road.

Already updated my 6500 with the 'region free' firmware. Drive works fine.
