T60P 2613-CTO CPU upgrade
T60P 2613-CTO CPU upgrade
Hello everyone, I have a question regarding my T60p's CPU upgrade.
1. Can i upgrade it to a T7500 from the stock T7200?
2. Does it void warranty?
Thanks in advance..

The T7200 has a 667 FSB and works on the the 945GM chipset (533/667 FS chipset). The T7500 requires an 800MHz FSB. Also, the 7200 is a Socket M and the 7500 is a Socket P. While they are both Core 2 Duos and both have 478 pins, the Socket P and Socket M are not pin compatible.
Reference list of mobile CPU's. You can use Socket M's on this list. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_In ... processors
Bottomline is no, you can't swap them.
You could swap in a T7600 as it is 667 FSB and Socket M. It would give you an extra 330MHz of speed, not a small increase, but is that worth the $641 price tag to you? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819111300
I wrote a guide for swapping CPUs on an R61e that may be helpful. http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?t=56960

Thank you very much for the clear explaination. I was thinking about a swap because I have a spare T7500 CPU sitting around, it was given to me for free after my friend dropped his laptop 30 ft from airport's departure level to arrival level...
I guess my T60P is a bit too old to enjoy the freebie.
Thanks again, and great guide on the R61 CPU swap!

If you're inclined to do your own CPU swap then getting that 965 chipset while the prices are low and your 945 laptop is still valuable may be a worthwhile idea. You could buy one of these R61e's cheap (they're $549 from Newegg now), install the 7500 and some more RAM and sell the T60 for about what the R61e cost. This would give you an upgrade path through at least Penryn CPU's which are running about 15% faster clock for clock on desktops. I would expect a 2800MHz Penryn CPU to become available in the future for around $200 as Intel ramps up for Nehalem. A pennie at 2.8Ghz is about equal to a 65nm chip running at 3000MHz or 3100Mhz.

I did a similar thing. The highest CPU for your T60p is the T7600, which is plenty fast! Yes, it will void your warranty. Solution? Easy. Keep your original CPU, and if you do need warranty, you need to re-install the original CPU if you have to send it in. No biggie. Just put it somewhere safe and you're good to do.

If you really want a T7500 in your T60p-2613 CTO (and it has a 15" LCD) take a look at this Post. It seems that forum member casperkid has transplanted a 14'' 4:3 T61p planer into a 15'' UXGA T60.
Therefore keep your T7500 handy - If you decide to do a T61 motherboard transplant and it has a slower CPU than your T7500, then you'll be able to use your freebie
