Latch Broke On My X32. How can I replace this?

#1 Post by epu » Tue Feb 12, 2008 9:35 am

One of the latches that keeps the case broke off (I'm not sure how). We're not referring to the entire top part of the case, but the piece of the left latch that extends into the groove of the bottom part of the case to keep it closed snapped off.

Am I right in assuming that to fix this, I'd have to replace the entire top panel (which holds the LCD in place) to remedy this problem?

The laptop closes, but not firmly as one of the latches of course is broken off.

Thanks for any advice concerning this . .

You can replace just the latches, but it does require disassembling the LCD.

Just a FYI, I bought a set of replacement latches for my X23 from that ebay seller. The ones I got were not OEM and were a little shorter in length than the original. This makes it sit somewhat loosely inside the lid. Works okay, but there is a little bit of wiggle even when latched.

edited for grammar!

Hi,

I have the same problem. How far do you have to disassemble the LCD screen to get to the latch? Do you have to remove the LCD panel and the antennas for the wireless?

Thanks,
Ed

Great! I can manage that. Any idea where to get OEM latches or the IBM FRU? I didn't see the FRU for just the latches in the HMM. Btw, my X32 is the 2885-K4U.

Well, the EBay link I provided earlier is a good choice. Wibony is very reliable, but they do use China Airmail ... very slow. Plan for a couple of weeks.

Someone commented that they weren't OEM and weren't quite the right length. It'll certainly be better than my broken latch, but I just wanted to check if there's a way to get original latches.

I bought some stuff from him and it was an exact match. Perhaps it was just that part that was not OEM? Perhaps they are all copies and that one part was a poor copy. I don't know. The packages of Trackpoint caps, and HD caddy and covers seemed to be exact matches. I didn't specifically check the HD covers for part numbers though. The color even matches up. I think if you email him and ask he will tell you the truth.
