I made my own power setting, with cpu at very low frequency, alot of other power saving features on, such as low lcd output, hd spindown etc.
Typically on this setuo i manage to get around 5.5-6 hours (with wifi on), haven't tried without wifi... granted it shuts down the screen from time to time, and the system gets slugish when trying to do more than just word process / surf the web, but it is fine, when i need more speed, the powerbar is not that far away and speed increase is almost instant...

There are 4 batteries for the X40. I may not have the terminology right
1) regular 4-cell internal battery
2) extended 8-cell internal battery (sticks out the back of the computer a little)
3) Ultrabay Slim battery, fits in drive slot of X4 Ultrabase, use in conjunction w/internal pack
4) External battery base (4 cells), fits on computer instead of Ultrabase, use in conjunction w/internal pack
I get about 2.5 hours from the 4 cell internal and 5-6 hours with the 8 cell internal.
My x40 came with the 8 cell but I didn't like the way it stuck out the back so I bought the 4 cell. In most situations where 2.5 hours isn't enough, 5 hours isn't enough either and I need the AC adapter. So I think the 4 cell is a better choice of default pack than the 8 cell.
The Ultrabay battery only seems useful if you need really extended runtime, in conjunction with the 8 cell pack. But it's expensive, and only adds a couple hours.
The external battery base with 4 cells just seems like a dumb idea to me. It would make sense if they put 16 or so cells in it, so you could run for 10+ hours. Otherwise you may as well just use the 8 cell internal pack.
