Win XP Upgrades Overwhelming T22

#1 Post by texpert5 » Tue Feb 12, 2008 4:56 pm

I upgraded the Win 2000 pro OS on Saturday to XP Pro. Since the installation Cd was dated 2002, there were 87 upgrades (security and or/critical ) on the Windows download site I needed to install. Via my dial up connection it took all afternoon. Now when the T22 is started and the usual programs are loaded, the upgrade icon appears and the disk lights comes on for a long time saying that it is downloading X %. However the T22 is never connected to the internet. . The recycle bin fills to about 1500 files and then the upgrade icon disappears. I delete the bin contents and shut off the T22. The message on the turn off button says that something will be installed and then the T22 shuts down. I repeat the sequence over and over with no end. How do I stop this nonsense?

Welcome to the forums.
All the Windows updates seem to have downloaded, but not all of them have been installed yet.
You probably have a setting in the Windows Update, to D/L and install later.
Let the laptop finish whatever installation at shut down, this may take some time, but when it finishes, it's done and the laptop shuts itself down..
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

Yes, that is true but the cycle of apparent download indicated by the icon starts again the next time that I start the system. I think that the apparent download icon tag message really means that the downloaded files are being decompressed and then slowly being installed. Remember that the T22 is not connected to the internet at all. The recycle bin is getting files from some place . It usually quits at about 1500 files. If I knew what folder the updates were downloaded to, maybe I could delete them and stop the process. Either that or continue until all updates have been decompressed.

I finally found a solution to this problem. After reinstalling Winxp Pro, the problem still persisted. After googling different error numbers and unsucessfully trying the suggested fixes, I finally found a reference to a utility recommended for win upgrade problems. It is Dial a Fix and it worked. All 90 updates installed after I ran it. Hooray.
