X32, port replicator and DVI widescreen

I tried an X31 with the port-replicator's DVI output going to my NEC 20" WUXGA LCD and while I get an image, I cannot get a widescreen resolution to display properly. Its got the latest ATI and NEC drivers.

I can get the correct resolution at both 16 and 32 bit color when using the analog VGA output, but the DVI output only allows standard aspect-ratio resolutions somehow gets the height wrong.

Analog looks terrible because of noise in the image using my best VGA cable, and is a distorted mess on my worst. DVI is razor sharp, just the resolution is all wrong.

Now I was planning on getting an X32 as my main workhorse machine due to the combination of decent pricing, decent speed and big, fast hard drives, but if I couldn't use DVI for my 20" widescreen that would force me to another model. Has anyone got a solution for this?

For what its worth, I have the same problem using my T40 which has a similar 32MB ATI Radeon 7500.

I do not believe X31/X32 can utilize properly DVI.
