Changed CMOS, now no screen

#1 Post by TP600owner » Wed Feb 13, 2008 8:48 am

I recently changed my CMOS, now I have a black screen upon booting the laptop.

Anyone know the reason?

Thanks

I assume that this is for the 600 series that you have listed in your signature...

Did you change or unplug anything else while changing the CMOS battery?

It's possible the machine thinks the lid is closed. Check to see if anything got stuck in that spot, or try an external monitor. See if Fn+F7 changes displays.

Good point whizkid... I always forget about the LCD switch that activates the LCD.

Also, you don't even need to attach an external monitor to see if the LCD flashes using the Fn + F7 combination. If the LCD doesn't atleast flash something on the screen, then I would attach an external monitor.

Checked everything that was suggested.

Nothing! Little tab for the LCD isn't stuck, FN+F7 flashes, but barely visible. Logo in left hand corner upon start up is barely visible as well.

Here's a stupid question on my part. Does it matter what kind of CMOS goes back into the laptop?

Meaning the one that came out is yellow with short leads, the one I replaced it with is black with longer leads.

It can make all the difference, but as long as the voltage and polarity are correct, and it fits, you should be fine.

I know my first mistake was I didn't look at where the CMOS went, so I opened the entire case.

I know that was wrong, I probably pinched or pulled something and I'm just not seeing it at this time.

I'll double check the CMOS and make sure it's the proper one, but I'm sure it's something I caused.

Well, if you opened the case, then that is most likely what caused the problem, not the CMOS battery. I would just open it up again and check your connections....especially with the LCD cable and inverter card.
