Part fell out of my X40 - your warranty service experience?

#1 Post by SteveS » Wed Feb 13, 2008 11:49 am

After working with several T43 and other T40 series for awhile, I wanted to try the smaller X40 out and bought a used one on e-bay. The machine is in great condition and seems to work fine. However, I noticed a rattle in the case from a loose part. I removed the hard drive and gently shook the case until the part fell out. It is a small surface mount component! Checking it with an ohmmeter, I determined it is a capacitor.

The computer still has 11 months of Lenovo warranty on it. If it will have a reliability problem, I would like to have it fixed (probably a system board exchange) while under warranty. The little time I have on it does not show any problems, but I have not exercised all of the hardware. Since it is a capacitor, it could have been used for power supply bypass, which would not necessarily show up as a problem.

Questions: Is PC Doctor the best way to exercise ALL of the hardware? I know it requires a lot of interaction.
Is there a better tool for this?
Does anyone have experience with Lenovo’s USA contract service provider on defects which don’t show symptoms? Will they fix it or just put me off?
Any other advice appreciated.

I would say yes, it's one of the best out there which is trusted by many companies. But I'm also sure you would find many similar diagnostic test softwares, if not better, some dollars may be involved for them.

Well, under IBM's testing environment usually if they find no problems, they don't replace anything. However if you tell them a capacitor came out of your thinkpad then they might be interested to fix something.
