Docking station choices?

#1 Post by dilip » Wed Feb 13, 2008 4:51 pm

I have a T42 and have always been using it with a dock (I think it's the mini-dock, 13R0291). I've been having intermittent problems with the external screen blanking, which is corrected when I turn off then on again the screen, sometimes a few times in succession. Today I found that my external keyboard at bootup would type the first three characters of the hard disk password, then be unresponsive; it worked fine when attached to the ThinkPad's USB ports. I finally got the external keyboard to work by attaching it to a USB hub.

It seems that the dock is probably having some problems, but the docks only come with a 1-year warranty. Are there any feasible options to repair/diagnose easily my dock? If not, what are hopefully under $100 options to get a new dock? Thanks. --Dilip

The problem is probably the dock, but it could be the connector on the thinkpad. (part of the motherboard) You can pick up a used 13R0291 mini-dock very cheap on eBay (about $10 plus the same amount for shipping) Just search for 13R0291. I would offer to sell you one, but I don't have an extra one right now.

Is the screen going blank and having to be turned off and then back on likely to be a docking station or screen problem? Also, is the Dock II, 2877-10U, another good choice for my T42? Thanks!

You can easily diagnose your monitor connecting it to another computer for a few days.

I have two Dock II docking stations here. These are excellent stations for T4x series ThinkPads. These docking stations are larger than your current one, but I think that Dock II are very good items for ThinkPads.

Thanks. I couldn't find much online about the DockII and its differences. I know that one can put a hard disk into the unit. Does it require an adapter like a second hard disk one? And is it the case that both the Dock II and Mini Dock are withdrawn? Thanks.
