X40 and 1.8" SSD

#1 Post by Nickolai » Thu Feb 14, 2008 7:35 am

Can I upgrade X40 with this Samsung 1,8 SSD drive?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820147021
Will the drive fit? (customer reviews say that it is extra thick)
Is the connector appropriate? (this drive has Micro-ATA, other option is ZIF)

I think the connector is on the wrong side on that Samsung. You probably want one like this...

For the best info on putting SSD in an X40 or X41 check out this thread...

I have little doubt it will be a sticky one day!

types of 1.8" drives

#3 Post by Nickolai » Thu Feb 14, 2008 10:01 am

OK, so as the customer on the link above notes,
...there are two styles of 1.8"" drives: one has a male connector on the wider side of the drive, and the other has a female connector on the narrower side of the drive. The Samsung SSD's that were available on newegg were the female connector style...
So, to fit in X40, SSD has to have the former, a male connector on the wider side of the drive, right?

I was reluctant to choose Transcend because of its reported low speeds. Samsung would promise better speeds and lower price/GB. Even faster would be Mtron, but they do not make 1.8" drives. (that's what I learned from reading reviews)

Does anyone have experience with this particular drive (Transcend TS8GIFD18 1.8" 8GB IDE) in X40? Or any other SSD in X40?

original X4x 1.8" hdds have a 2.5" connector on their side, they are very short 2.5" drives in fact. You would need an exotic micro ata - 2.5 ata cable and enough space for the cable in the bay.
