DVR-RW will not write to DVD on T30

#1 Post by kitmcdowall » Thu Feb 14, 2008 11:44 am

I just received a DVD-RW that I bought from an ebay dealer. It is a clone of some type. It looks like an IBM case, but has no serial/FRU/barcode strip at the top. It was advertised as being able to read and write both CDs and DVDs. It does work OK for CD read and write and DVD read (as my previous ultrabay drive did) but it gets an error message when I try to copy anything to a DVD blank disk.

Do I have to install some additional software to get the DVD-RW support? Maybe an updated DLA or updated RecordNow?

I have a 2366-85U T30 dated 3/06 and Windows XP Pro.

The new drive has no vendor name on it, but on the properties for the drive it says Hithachi_ DK32EA-40B disk drives and below that it says Optiarc DVD RW AD-5540A DVD/CD-RW.

On the drive top is has an official looking IBM logo and DVD/RW.

Can anyone help me get the DVD write part working?

Thanks.

Get the free Cdburnerxp program from http://cdburnerxp.se/
With that you can burn DVDs as well.
Your Recordnow is probably not capable to handle DVD/R or /RW

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

The Optiarc AD-5540A drive appears to support most of the usual types of DVD writable formats:

http://www.sonynec-optiarc.eu/en/exhibi ... 5540a.html

I use DVDInfoPro to verify proper operation of optical drives. This program has a test which reads all of the sectors of the disk and reports if there are any errors detected (CRC Read Error Test). When started, the program presents you with a list of supported read and write formats, along with some other drive information (maker, firmware level, region code, etc.).

When running the CRC test, use a completely full CD or DVD so that the drive is made to scan the full range of possible data sectors. I use a set of disks (CDR, CDRW, DVD+RW) which I have burned myself with data files.

The CDBurnerXP product works great. Thanks a bunch. It is easy to use and picked up the DVD drive automatically. I wrote a couple DVDs, one finalized and one not, and then added to the one that was not finalized.

Again, thanks for the fast and perfect response.

This is a neat site. Thanks to all that help keep it going.
