T22 Possible motherboard, LCD screen problems

#1 Post by jvacarchuk » Thu Feb 14, 2008 9:23 pm

I have a T22, when I turn it on it does the following.

beeps once
beeps three times
pauses
then beeps three times
then beeps once.

There is no picture on the screen and I tried removing the ram, the t22 does the same thing. I also I attached an external monitor and still no picture.
Is my motherboard finished or the LCD? Prior to this happening there was a vertical red line on the LCD.
Regards,

John

This is the wrong or failed memory code 1-3-3-1. Take a look at the Hardware Maintenance Manual HERE. You can find much more necessary info there.
Z61p (WUXGA)/2.16ghz/2gb/60gb, R51/1.8ghz/1gb/160gb, R40/1.5ghz/2gb/80gb, 600E/366mhz/416mb/20gb, Project R51 with SXGA+

Welcome to thinkpads.com!

Assuming that the system was working (mostly) correctly beforehand, then you have the correct memory (PC100 or PC133 low density) installed. The 1-3-3-1 beep code indicates that you have bad or missing memory as vanaya has pointed out. Removing the module and still receiving the 1-3-3-1 sequence would be expected. The problem now becomes: is your memory module at fault or is it something on the motherboard?

If you have any other PC100 or PC133, low density modules then try those. Low density would be 16 individual memory components on the module for a 256MB or 8 total components on a 128MB module. If you still obtain the same 1-3-3-1 beep code and you are fairly sure that the "new" memory is good, then that leaves the motherboard. You could also try installing your module(s) in another laptop which takes PC100 sticks and see if they work there.

The red line on the LCD should have nothing to do with your memory problem.

I removed one of the memory modules and turned on the T22 and it ran. So it is a bad memory module. After booting up the system I get an warning stating I am low on virtual memory.

Should I replace both modules (512K), if so who do you recommend for this memory.

The red line on the screen, what is this?

Thanks.

John

The T22 can take a maximum of two 256MB low density modules. The OS you are running, presumably Windows XP, really does need about 512MB to run efficiently so that's why you are getting the low virtual memory warning.

Any major manufacturer of memory modules can be used, and even some of the "no-name" ones. The major players are: Micron/Crucial, Samsung, Hynix/Hynudai, Toshiba, Mitsubishi, ProMOS/Mosel Vitelic (full disclosure: I'm an employee), Infineon, Elpida, Nanya. Those are the ones which actually make the memory chips on the modules. Module assemblers take what they can buy/find on the open market and attach them to modules: PNY, Kingmax, Kingston, Corsair, Silicon Mountain, and many, many others.

If you use a memory diagnostic program such as memtest86+ to verify the proper operation of each module you install, then you should fine. Be sure to check each module/slot separately as you could actually have a problem with a bad memory slot, as opposed to a bad module.

The red line on the screen, be it vertical or horizontal, is most likely due to some damage in the LCD itself. "Dead" pixels like that are usually not repairable. Sometimes if you put a little bit of pressure along the edges of the lid/bezel (not the screen itself), you can get the line to disappear but it rarely happens.
