T42 LCD too sensitive to vibration/shock???

#1 Post by thinkpadhk » Mon Nov 29, 2004 6:48 pm

Hi all.

I was just wondering. Do you guys feel that the 14" SXGA+ LCD on the T42 is way too sensistive to vibration or shock?

When I type on a shaky table my LCD seems to react to any vibration such as small jolts of the table, or even when I type too hard. You can see the screen "flickering" (almost like how a loose lightbulb gets quickly dimmer and then back to normal when you shake it).

Who else get's this? If you don't see this for small vibrations/shock, at what levels do you see it (i.e. when you move laptop from place to place etc)?

Thanks.

Sounds like a loose connector from the mobo to the screen.

I can bouce the table that my T42 14 inch SXGA+ is on, violently, and it never flickers.

Darn... then there must be something wrong with my thinkpad!!! I don't know if I want to send it in for repair though.

Do you guys think it's too much of a hassle and risk to send it back to IBM? I mean, I can live with the flicker... it's only a slight annoyance. And most of the time I'll be able to make sure the laptop is on a sturdy table and such.

So should I risk sending it in?

Doesn't happen with mine either. Might be a loose connection? I'm amazed at how thin the LCD casing is, but at the same time, gives a sense of its great durability.

thinkpadhk - YES. send it in, if i paid good money for a tp and it had that problem i would be on the phone to ibm in a second. you should have sorted thos already, they will honour your warranty - my experience with ibm tech support is that they are excellant. why are so many people reluctant to send their laptops into ibm???? its understandable if its something like a cosmetic imperfection, like a creaking palm rest, but your screen flickering is an issue. posting in a forum will not help, unless knowing that other people have the same problem comforts you...???

IBM pretty much set the standard for servicing laptops. One time I got 3 day turnaround on service. And they did exactly what they were supposed to do ....replace the a/c jack board.

Send it in!

The reason I hate to send stuff to IBM is that I don't want to be without my ThinkPad! It's hell!!! :D

SimonCC - yeah... you pretty much hit the nail right on the head. I was hoping that everyone would say "yeah, this is normal", because I am really paranoid about sending my laptop in for servicing. My T42 is brand spanking new and in pristine condition, so I would hate for it to get all scuffed up and scratched by some careless technician. Ohhh... the dilemna.

Well if it is within the 30 days then just return it and have them replace it...

MAybe you want to phone the tech support and check with them...if they cannot tell you how to fix it, tehy might ask you to take it to a service point.DO not SHIP any part to IBM if you don't have a case open, the part will not be returned.
