T23 - boot problem

#1 Post by zackuk1 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 10:23 am

Hi,
I recently replaced the DVD multidrive on my T23 because it would read data and play music CD's and read data but not play video DVD's
I replaced it with a 'Sony' DVD writer which I bought from a 'reputable' ebay seller. This unit works perfectly in every respect, reads, writes, plays etc.
Unfortunately, when I boot the laptop with the 'new' DVD writer installed, it hangs at the post boot screen (IBM Logo) for over 4 minutes, then boots Ok.
When I boot with the old CD/DVD drive installed it boots normally!
Anyone have any ideas?

First of all, welcome to the forum!

You may want to update your BIOS to the latest one and see whether that makes a difference.

If it doesn't, you should return the drive if possible.

T23 Boot problem

#3 Post by zackuk1 » Sat Feb 16, 2008 10:50 am

Hi, thanks for quick reply.
Unfortunately I bought this drive probably a year ago, and have suffered the problem since. I use my T23 very seldom, but I have now decided to set it up as a Linux machine using Open Suse 10.3.
I have not done this yet and don't know if the problem will still be there with the Linux install.
I have read elsewhere of indications of problems with DVD/RW on older IBM laptops!

cheers

I shall update bios first - as you suggest.

I've taken Panasonic, Toshiba, HGST HLDS and Pioneer optical drives and stuck them into a T23 without any operational problems, however, I have usually not tried booting the system with them. I generally hot-swap the new drive and hibernate the system so it's rare that the T23s go through a "cold start".

Couple of questions:

- What's the full model number of the Sony drive?
- In Windows Device Manager, how is the Sony optical drive listed? In other words, check the DVD/CDROM entry and report what the "location" line says in the General tab.

My guess is that the drive is reporting itself as a slave and the location is "1 (1)". My understanding is that Ultrabay optical drives should be connected as master (location 0 (0)) and this is what might be giving the POST a problem.

Hi there,
thanks for the advice.

The drive is a Sony DVD RW DW-G521A
FRU P/N 08K9865 ASM P/N 08K9862 REV 182 May 2006

You are dead right - there is a problem with drive 'locations' !
The DVD drive is 0 (0)
My hard drive is also 0 (0)
This is no doubt the cause of the 'post' hang - any ideas how to rectify this?

Thanks

No, the DVD drive should report as "location 0 (0)". That just means it's the master device on the secondary disk controller. If that's the case then I don't know what the POST delay is all about.

Check the Master/Slave/Cable select jumper on that drive, it must be Master.

T23 - Boot Problem

#9 Post by zackuk1 » Mon Feb 25, 2008 4:51 pm

Hi, thanks for suggestion,

This is an ultrabay drive - no jumpers on these drives
Bios is latest version !

I get round problem by unlocking drive in bay - then booting - then when drive is needed - fully insert it.- drive then works normally.

If I need to boot from CD/DVD I just have to suffer the '4 minute' hang at 'post'

C'est la vie
But still puzzled!!
