t42p, t43p or maybe t60p?

Hello! It's my first (but not last) post here, I found you by google.

I want to buy some thinkpad for photoshop, lightroom and some web design. Now my desktop is: athlon64 3000+, 2gb ram, radeon 9550, 21'' IBM p275 crt monitor. I've done deep research and didn't found answer to my question: will be a pentium M 1,8-2,13 ghz flexview laptop (t42/3p) good replacement for system that I have now? Or I should rather buy t60p?

My present configuration fits to my wants perfectly but now I want some mobility.

Although the former FlexView IPS displays were the best you could ever get (comparing to current crappy notebook displays) they were 6 bit only anyway. It is still not enough for graphics work.

If you have to have mobility, as in laptop, your best bet would be a T60p. Be forewarned, though, that these are neither small nor light machines.

The Boe-Hydis IPS FlexView LCD that has been offered on these machines is by far the best laptop LCD ever, but bear in mind the limitations that Puppy has been referring to. And, you get ATi 5200 256Mb video as opposed to 128Mb on T42p/T43p.

My advice would be that before you go out and spend a grand or more on a T60p, try to locate and test out R50p which is the cheapest UXGA FlexView machine with 128Mb video that you can find. If that comes close to matching your needs, go for a T60p. If it doesn't, forget all about these machines for your daily work. You may actually find out that R50p fits your needs completely.

As much as I love ThinkPads and am a certifiable FlexView addict, I'd hate to see you disappointed. And, I'd rather have a $500 disappointment (R50p) than a $1000+ one (T60p).

And what about the performance: dothan vs athlon64 or core duo vs athlon64? Maybe I should go for something non-IPS and leave CRT - that's the option too. But what then? Dothan or core (core2)?

Ina that way x60 would be good way?

My first question is: cat I replace my desktop by some laptop (+CRT)???

BTW our local usanotebook reseller is just offering a T42p UXGA FlexView for a ~650 EUR incl. VAT http://usanotebook.cz/notebook/2373HTU- ... 0x1200.php Maybe you can find similar offer in Poland.

X60 does not have any option for DVI output (even via dock ) and has probably the worst display quality ever. Connecting CRT monitor via VGA out is possible but the quality of VGA output filter is poor. You'll get blurry picture with several interferences for higher resolutions and refresh rates. Nothing like Matrox etc.

Replacing a desktop with notebook depends on your needs. The weakest part is still HDD performance. Even the newest 2.5" 7200 rpm drives like Hitachi 7K200 does not reach the performance of typical desktop 3.5" HDD.
