Business Contact Mgr. update kb946140 error 779

#1 Post by sgmidf » Sat Feb 16, 2008 4:59 pm

Whether I like it or not, Windows Update wants to install Update KB946140 for Outlook 2007 Business Contact Manager. I get an error 779 (no more detail) when it tries to install. There doesn't seem to be a way to "hide" this update. Can anyone shed any light on how to deal with this? I'm using an X61s with Vista Ultimate.

Thanks

I had this problem just a few days ago. Fix is as follows:

First, go to Microsoft Downloads, search for KB946140, and download the manual install package. Then, run that, it will give you an error message saying permission is denied to modify a file (I believe mapisvc.inf in windows/system32). Navigate to that file, right click and edit the security options. Click advanced, change the owner to your user name running under the administrator mode. Close the window to save the settings, right click --> security tab again, and give your user name (admin mode) full access. Close the window, and run the manual install. It should work. Be sure to restore the settings to the default read/execute security mode and owner back to system when you are done. The problem is a problem with authentication for the "Trusted Installer" user class.

Had the same problem. I right clicked it, hit "hide update", and it never popped up again.

Thanks. As I don't use BCM, I'll just hide it. I may consider the manual install in the future if I can use the feature.

This is a fix that works - but I have a problem with resetting the permissions. When I try to do this, the full access box and others are greyed out. Also, there is no SYSTEM listed in the ownership dialogs. Could you perhaps give a step-by-step on how to reset the default permissions please?

Many thanks

Steve

Does anyone know how to REMOVE the business contact manager? I have been unable to get it off my system for months now.
