Got two X30s, but both need work...

#1 Post by WildBill » Sat Feb 16, 2008 7:29 pm

Rescued two X30s from the dumpster. Both are in good physical shape, with keyboards and all. Also got two batteries and a X3 Ultrabase.

However, both X30s have issues. One of them is mostly functional - except for the onboard ethernet port and the optical disc controller I think. When I plug a network cable into the system I see the link light on my switch go on and off and on and off, and the system never gets an IP address. The box does work fine using a PCMCIA NIC, however. As far as the optical disc goes, if I hook this X30 into the ultrabase and try to boot off CD it wins up spinning, then shutting the drive down, spinning it up, shutting it down, in a cycle. It never actually boots. But the system's in decent physical shape and works fine with a PCMCIA NIC, so I have it running Ubuntu and it seems to be mostly happy.

The other X30 is a long shot, as it doesn't boot at all. No LEDs, nothing. I've tried removing the CMOS battery and doing the 'drain any capacitor power button" trick but nothing seems to help.

Is there any chance I can get the 2nd X30 running, or failing that, can I take the two systems and get one fully working one out of them? I haven't popped them apart yet, but I fear the ethernet and optical disc issues I see are on the motherboard of the working X30... and since the non-booting X30 won't boot, I can't assume that its motherboard works.

Thanks!

Nice, since someone will ask you for one, could I have first dibs? Someone gave me an R32 this year so that is how I am consoling my envy.

X30 Systems

Are the keyboard bezels intact (no cracks or breaks)?

I have two good, working X30s that have cracked keyboard bezels. I want to sell them but can't with those cracks. I've been looking for bezels for a long time - found some, but I don't want to pay $50 for them.

Maybe we could combine some things.
