Almost ready to pull the trigger....

#1 Post by GIFF » Sun Feb 17, 2008 12:08 pm

Well I've been looking for a laptop to replace my desktop, and be my one and only machine in the house. I like thinkpads because I used to have an old T20, and it was great. Anyways... It looks like Lenovo is having a presidents day sale. These are the specs I picked for it:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T8300 (2.4GHz 800MHz 3MBL2)[1]

15.4 WSXGA+ TFT (1680x1050)

NVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M (128MB)

2 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)[8]

120GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm[4]

DVD Recordable 8x Max Dual Layer, Ultrabay Slim[5]

6 cell Li-Ion Battery[60]

Now because of the sale it says I'm saving $315 but I also found a code for 20% off theh T-series so that's another $267.80

So the original price was $1654.00 before coupons/sale and is now $1071.20.

What do you think of this pricing? I'm not in any rush to get a new machine. But if the price is right I am.
I mean I'm not going to go buy this a month or two from now for $1654.00.

What do you guys think about this?
Also this sale ends tomorrow :(

If you need the machine now go for it...it's a great deal. Lenovo often has these types of discounts, so if you miss this one another will come along in a few months.

That's a very good discunt but as Harry said, you can get similarly good prices several times a year.

Have you considered the R61? If you don't mind the extra 0.6 pounds, the R series can give you comparable specs for about $200 less. My friend just bought a nice R61 directly from Lenovo for $756 including sales tax. It is just as well built as the T series. I'm not sure but I think there is a 15% off coupon for the R series right now.

Also don't forget about the price protection plan: if the price drops below what you paid within 21 days of purchase (or a month? someone please correct me I can't find the exact length at the moment) you get refunded back the difference. I got my ThinkCentre for $299 that way ($399 - $100).

As someone who almost has to have a deal to even be able to enjoy their machine, this is a good one. You can always sell it, most likely with profit! So it's a win-win either way. The only thing I'd change is the video card. 256MB would be ideal.

Do they still have T60p blowout sales?

About the President's Day sale though: I was in the market for a new laptop for a year and a half before picking up my tablet, and over that entire time I'd look at the Lenovo site once every 1-2 weeks or so. There was never any time in that period when Lenovo didn't have a "sale" of some kind. They just finished their Valentine's Day sale, now President's Day, soon it'll be Spring Break, St. Patrick's Day, Graduation Day sale... etc etc etc. Usually I find the lowest price "sales" aren't for X dollars off, they're the X% off ones - I remember a 20 or 25% off sale half a year ago maybe that was stackable with a 20% coupon I believe. Now that was a real bargain. But there's always a sale.

@Crunch I just did a quick build on their site and a t61p with a 256mb gfx card is about $100 more than what's in y original post. Is is really a huge difference?

@hart22 that's what I figured. It's like when you want into jcpennys or the bonton everthing is ALWAYS 40%-50% but if you don't pay attention to that then you think your getting insane deals.

It depends what you're going to use it for, as always, of course, but looking at the math. $100 buys you DOUBLE the VRAM? Another no-brainer as far as I'm concerned. Will you be running Vista? I'd say it's almost a must-have for Vista, if you're going to want to do a lot of multi-tasking. It depends on whether or not the $100 are going to hurt you financially. If they don't, go for the better GFX card.

Also, consider how long you want this baby to last you...A few years at least I would think? Again, thinking long-term, for a $100, it would not even be a question in my mind, but again, that's me. If you're financially strapped, I don't know, you might have to think about it, and maybe not do it. More sophisticated applications, which will be more resource-demanding ones, will be written for Vista. Are you into gaming? Then you definitely want the 256MB card! You're getting one hell of a deal here...if it were $300 more, I'd say wait a minute, do I really "need" this...but 100 bucks?

I'm just telling you what I would do. Is the price for the whole system before or after tax, by the way?

As for the "if you act now", "hurry, offer expires in..." deals, that's true...if you don't act now, there'll be another one almost immediately following this one. This is just a good one...two discounts stacked. Coolness.
