Slow Boot-Up in Fresh W2K Install... WHY?

Hey gang...

I need some help and advice. The fellow who bought my T21 received it and powered it on only to discover that it took just over 6:00 minutes to boot from power on to ready-to-go start screen. I should note that for some strange reason he timed it with the power brick disconnected but the battery indicater showed green.

If you read any of my other posts on reformatting the HDD, I wondered if my (un)conventional W2K install might be slowing things down? I suggested to the guy that he put the recovery CD in the machine and start from scratch. This machine NEVER took more than a minute to boot and that's when I had it loaded with programs.

I did have the drive partitioned into 10/15/13 Gig drives (C/Root, D/Programs, & D/Data) and maybe that sped things up?

Anyway, I'd like to help the guy out and get him on the right track, so any/all advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm puzzled but never got to really check things out before shipping.

Almost every time I've seen this recently it's because the unit is looking for an ethernet connection that no longer exists.

What was your "unconventional" install method? Maybe some hardware is faulty and it's having a hard time?

In a nutshell, my (bootable) recovery CD dissapeared for a day and a half or so, and in a panic I used my desktop's regular W2K Pro CD to install after FDisk'ing with a W98 Emergency Disk I had laying around. After some struggling, I got the install done, then downloaded some pertinent drivers from IBM's site, but I probably didn't get _ALL_ the drivers installed. I noted this to the buyer, and told him that he'd probably be better off doing a fresh Recovery/Format/Install on his own.

He emailed and said everything arrived fine, but the boot time was 6+ minutes from power on to workable desktop... but then he mentioned that this was with the power cord unplugged and running on a battery that obviously wasn't fully charged. I told him to charge the battery to where it said 100% on the taskbar, not just when it turns green in the LED. Also, does IBM step down the performance of the CPU or other items when on battery power? I know some notebooks do that.

And of course, the Bootable Recovery CD popped up just as I was packing everything in the shipper, so rather than unpack and start all over (it was 3:00 AM), I just slipped it into the package with the rest of the software.

It depends on the CPU, most mobile chipsets automatically adjust the CPU speed according to the amount needed and whether it's on battery or not. Did it boot up faster when he plugged it in?

After I asked all thos questions, and made the suggestions... I haven't heard from him so if silence means happiness... well, I guess he resolved his problems.
