X60T vs. X61T

#1 Post by Ken Fox » Sun Feb 17, 2008 3:55 pm

The last thing I need is another Thinkpad, and hopefully reason will win out and I won't add to my stable, which is rapidly becoming an overcrowded corral. Nonetheless, I'm a little bit intrigued by the X60T/X61T models, for which I probably have no real, legitimate, need.

That having been said, if the right deal came around I might take a flyer and get one to play around with. I have been reading through the various X6xT threads here and other places and have not been able to get a good idea of what the X61T has over the X60T, other than for some different screen choices, bezel problems on some X61Ts, processor differences (core due vs. core 2 duo) and presumably a chipset difference. And, it appears that Vista is better for the tablets than is XP 2005/tablet, however I have 4 unused Vista business upgrade disks lying around in a drawer from the Moduslink debacle, so I could switch OSs to Vista if I bought a tablet that came with XP, so that is of no concern.

What exactly differentiates these two tablets that is of any consequence, X60T vs. X61T? If there is a good comparison review out there, I have not found it.

Thanks for any information.

I struggled with this myself. I still haven't decided if I want an X61 or if it really doesn't matter. I'm leaning towards it not mattering.

The X61 gets you the Santa Rosa C2D and the X3100 chipset. Neither will make much difference in terms of performance; given enough RAM, either will run Vista with Aero Glass adequately. If you're planning on doing any serious gaming, neither will do you any good at all so the GMA950 vs the X3100 is a meaningless argument.
X61 Tablet - 1.6GHz C2D, SXGA+, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, Vista Business.

i have other laptops but i'll be honest i never use 'em

The other difference I know of is the X61 T can handle 4 gig of Ram, and Turbo memory. I have 2 gig on my X60 T and have no issues to speak of. I also have no screen bezel issues, and the SXGA+ screen looks great, albeit a bit dark for my tastes.

Ken, go with the X61T and Vista which does work better for the tablets than XP. I used to have an X41Tablet and the XP software wasn't so good. I'm currently using my X61s with a small Wacom tablet when I need it and the software is much better.

You don't want to buy an XP system and then use the Lenovo upgrade because a lot of people including myself have had trouble with this upgrade (for instance, screen resolutions were changing). Best to get a machine with Vista that was intended to ship with Vista. I had so much trouble I ended up going from the X60 to an X61s (which I'm running with Vista Business 64). It just wasn't worth the trouble.

I'm running Vista with the SP1 RTM (final version 6001.18000) and it works really well.

If you get the tablet, don't forget to order Msft OneNote 2007 which works really well with the tablets.

Regarding the OS: Some encounter a severe power drain under Vista. My x61t does only run 4h. Did not compare it to XP but it is reported to run 5-6h then. But there are also others getting this runtime with Vista. Yet, this problem is unsolved, TBOMK. Mine does run 6h+ using Xubuntu, however..

Interested to wait for a couple of months and see what happens? See if there is any new models coming out with the tablet functionality.

I'm kind of in the same boat.

I have no real need for a tablet or touch screen, but the high res on an X series is mighty tempting.

I'd at least put it to use for college stuff too.

But it's a hard thing to pick between x61s, with the smaller form factor and MUCH lower price, with the ultralight, bright-[censored] screen.
or the x61t with the high res and MT/MV screen, but slightly larger body.

Where? Actually where would it be a good (probably virtual) place to shop for Lenovo stuff in Germany?

Prime suspects for reasonable prices are OK2, Notebooksbilliger and Cyberport. Check out this X60t with ULV CPU.
X60t; 1.2 GHz ULV; XGA; 4 GB; 32 GB SSD; 16 GB SDHC; abg; XP; X6
