X20 mini pci wireless

#1 Post by DW » Tue Nov 30, 2004 7:49 am

Hello,
I am a newbie waaay back on the trailing edge. But, I just bought a x20 with an ultrabay. I wanted something light to web surf and occasional word processing. I noticed that the computer has a mini pci card. Are the min pci wifi's that came out after this model compatible with the X20. I assumed that they were  ! I also noticed a recent post on a wifi compact flash card (neat!) that just came out. Anyone try that?

Thanks for any input.

The X20 has no internal antenna, so MiniPCI would be a lot of work and probably not worthwhile. I don't think anyone here has done it, so you'd be on your own.

The LinkSys CF WiFi cards have been made to work with Linux. I don't know about Windows though. LinkSys does not provide Windows drivers for them.

Don't know if this helps but at a cousins place, she has a LinkSys setup for her desktop. I took the receiver which has the antenna and plugged it in via USB 1.1 to my X20 running XP PRo, it installed and I was connected in no time.

Ive got an Ambicom WL1100C-CF compact flash wireless card, there are windows drivers for it here. I just tried it in the compact flash slot on my X20 and windows found it and asked for a driver (im not going to install it as I already have pcmcia wireless card) so I dont see any reason why it wouldnt work.

Ambicon CF wireless card

#5 Post by rlc5 » Sat Dec 11, 2004 6:29 am

If anyone still cares...

I've been using the Ambicon CF card for about 6 months. Very handy compared to the bulkier PCMCIA card. I don't have to remove it when I put the TP into its carry case, it's less likely to get bumped, and it's just "cooler" (any X20 can use a little mojo boost, eh?). The software works well. I think it uses less power than the PC card. And, although I haven't done any formal tests, the reception seems about 90-95% as good as the PC card.

CF wireless?

#6 Post by epbrown » Sun Oct 15, 2006 12:28 am

Sorry to dig this thread back up, but I'm wondering if there are other sucess stories about using a compact flash wi-fi card in an X20, preferably running Windows 2000. I've got a Transnote using a Sandisk card but the drivers seem to conflict with Windows' ACPI drivers - I get a blue-screen error message and reboot whenever the system suspends, hibernates, shuts down or otherwise tries to power off the card before it's been stopped.

Since the Transnote is an X20 sibling (same hardware in a different configuration), I'm pretty sure any cf card that works properly in an X20/21/22 would work fine for me as well. Anyone? I searched eBay and couldn't find an "Ambicon" card, btw.

Couple of things:

First, I found the Ambicon card - it's actually "AmbiCom."

Second, can we confirm people have gotten the cards to work in the Compact Flash slot, not using a pc card adapter in the pc card slot? A friend just suggested that the problem might be that the CF slot isn't managed using APM/ACPI like the pc card slot is, and so the error is because Windows can't shut down the slot itself. While researching other card options, I've noticed that 2 brands claiming to be W2K compatible specifically mention using the card with the pc card adapter, rather than the CF slot; lends a bit of validity to the idea.

Let me suggest you try to find a 3COM wireless network adapter with XJACK. Here is a link

The antenna retracts so nothing protrudes when it is not in use. It is the most satisfying laptop accessory I have ever purchased and I got the tip in this very forum!

While I appreciate the suggestion, I'm looking for a compact flash card solution to leave my lone pc card slot free. I already own a pair of 3Com x-jack cards that I use for other ThinkPads.

I had an Intel 2915 ABG Mini-PCI in my old X20 for awhile. I used T30 antennas routed behind the LCD.

I've done that as well - I've got 2 t-notes and my daily driver has a miniPCI card installed. For my back-up machine, I want to go with just the compact flash card, in order to leave it as stock as possible.
