changing fan T30

#1 Post by kboykowboy » Mon Feb 18, 2008 12:26 pm

Dear All
I'm going to change my fan in my T30. However i have a question about the thermal sheet - i'm not sure i have the right stuff!

In my manual it says i have to stick new thermal sheet when changing the fan (see here).

How ever the fan i bought did'nt come with new thermal sheet. Check out my fan here.

What it DID come with was this heat sink from radio shack. I suppose it is what is called "thermal grease" in my manual.

So now - it looks to me like i should apply the so called thermal grease the the so called thermal sheet. Since i did'nt have any i went to the local "we have all shorts of strange things shop". They then gave me this. It does'nt have a name, and it is not sticky. it seems to be cilicone or rubber of some kind... But i have no idea if it can be used as thermal sheet?! can anyone help me out?!

People i have asked says they have never heard of thermal sheets - and that i should just use the heat sink i got from radio shack.

what's your oppion on this?

thanks in advance!

Welcome to the Forum!

Either will work just as well but it depends. Spread the thermal paste very thinly across the top of the silicon chip. When I say thin I mean microns. No blobs Paste is meant to fill voids in the silicons surface and heatsink surface, like pits and scratches/machining marks and that's it. A thermal pad is just less messy and pad material quality is paramount to good heat transfer.

The thing you don't want to do is to create a blanket, trapping the heat rather than passing it through. That's all it's supposed to do, pass the heat through, from the processor to the heatsink. It's supposed to do it more efficiently than if it where dry.

If you've never done it before, here are some instructions: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/274

It's not needed as long as you have the thermal paste. Your all set.

Another fan problem, is it easy to replace it alone, or it's better leave that to service (which is bloody expensive!). I even don't know which model I should buy and where is the best place? Ebay?
Thanks!

@mind72
Give us the full, exact type 2366-XXX.
That way we know which model motherboard you have, and which fan is compatible.
Put that also in your signature!

EDIT:
Thanks for changing the signature.
You need a rather rare fan with P/N 91P8908
Good luck with finding one.
And yes, you can easily replace this yourself, using the HMM

those pads are made for TO-220 sized transistors, regulators and other devices for when they need to be mounted to a heat sink but also electrically insulated at the same time. not nearly as good as a very light smear of thermal grease.

I wonder can someone tell me which is average fan lifetime? My is still working but there are some strange noises coming from it from time to time...my t30 have been purchased in 2003. However, it is not used every day - more kind of 3 days a week for about 8 hours.
So,on the end I'm wondering is it time to replace fan or just to make some kind of fan cleaning. Some advice? Thanks!

If you look after them (i.e. clean the dust-bunnies out regularly), they could last for 5 years or more.
Here are some good instructions on how to clean/lubricate a (noisy) fan

Many thanks RBS ! It has been recently in the service, and I told them to dust off everything, so maybe I should buy new fan. After all, 5 years are gone ...

If you follow the lubricating procedure from that link, your funny noise might be gone. On the other hand, it might be easier to get another fan. Regardless if you clean or lube, don't forget to put fresh thermal paste between CPU and fan!

Yes I know, but how to be sure that fan will not stop to work soon? For example, in June I will go on two months trip and I must be sure that T30 will work (it will be summertime!)! So maybe it's the dust, but how someone can know is it the end of the fan is coming!?! Probably no way :( It is kind of hard decision to make...to buy new one which is in this case expensive, or to try to blow out the dust and clean and pray! I have left him to work for the past 4 hours and NHC is showing not more then 52C on cpu and 47C on hd. Which is i think fine. :??: btw. I have also find some threads where some people said that putting oil on fan is not good at all... :?: That I can say that this lap have been working every day for 5 yrs then I would replace the fan right away with no add. questions...but it didn't worked so much...
