Sorry, no update from me. I sold the T20 to someone else as I was not able (or willing) to fix it. The T23 is a nicer machine anyway.

FWIW in case someone else comes accross this issue. I fixed it by replacing the CPU. I had a spare T20 for parts that had a 750mhz CPU and after I swapped it, the machine was nice and fast. Well, as fast as a PIII 750 with 512MB can be running XP
TP 600 2645 51U PII upgraded to 400mhz and 416mb RAM - First backup - Gone
TP 600E 2645 4BU PII 400mhz and 548mb RAM - Second Backup - Gone
TP 600X 2645 5EU PIII 500mhz and 589mb RAM - New Back-up
TP T-23 2647 ??? PIII 1.13G and 1GB of RAM + Wifi - Just got it :)

I'we been thinking this speed thing. I have as spare computer PIII 450mhz with 384mb desktop machine. It seems to be way more faster in any way than t20 with 700mhz cpu. It's kinda funny. Is it just that these older laptops are much slower than same speed or slower desktop computers ?

I ran two tests between Intel PIII 350mhz desktop and t20 700mhz. SuperPI 1M was 4min 35sec at desktop and t20 made same test at 2min 57sec. At cpu speed t20 beated desktop easily. Next test was hard drive read speed. Results was unbeleavable bad for t20! As you can see from this picture. Desktop machine has promise sataII 150 hdd controller. T20 has t43 "approved" 7200 rpm seagate hdd. Are these results normal ?

Are you running the T20 on both AC and battery?
If not, the T20 only runs at about half CPU speed!

Both. I've set cpu speed adapitive on ac and battery modes.

Well, The problem is back.

The machine is now running at less than 200mhz again. I thought that changing the CPU fixed the problem. But it seems it was only temporary. Do CPU's go bad? I wonder if they overheated or something? The fan does spin on start-up, so it does work. I just find it strange that 2 CPU's both worked fine for a while, then both reported only 200mhz or less after a while.

I'm stumped.

I just verified that my t20 uses every speed that hdd can give. I ran one speed test with my usb -> ide adapter and got 35mb/s read speed. It's close what t20 had on this speed test. usb -ide adapter was on my desktop pc.
