IBM replaced my motherboard and cmos battery on my T42 when it was about 3 days out of the 3 year extended warranty, thanks to some counseling from members of this forum. Shortly afterwards, I started having problems with the machine rebooting "from a serious error" and getting an ATI Graphics Card error message. Sometimes the Message said to get an updated driver, which I have, and sometimes it said no solution was available for the problem I have. All it took to cause the reboot was to remove the machine from the dock at first, later by simply readjusting the screen(in or out of the docking station), and later yet just moving(swiveling) the unit in any direction(again, in or out of the docking station). Last night it started doing this while I was typing an email, so the only movement was the striking of the keys, and the machine was not in the docking station. I always keep it connected to a power source because it is on the original battery. And it always just goes to a blank, dark screen, and will eventually reboot if I leave it alone long enough. Usually I'm working so I turn it off and reboot using the power button. Whenever I reboot it takes me to the Windows error messages. On a few occasions, I shut it down for the night using the 'sleep' key along with the fn button. It goes to sleep, but when I try to wake it up the next day, it reboots into a fresh restart and gives me the error message. IBM says 'no thanks' when I asked for help and referred me to their web site for driver upgrades, which was fine, but it didn't work.
I'm okay with whatever repair I need since I feel like I have an "almost new" machine with a new motherboard. I just don't know where to send it, or who to call for repair. Currently this is my only PC, so I'd like to have fast turnaround. Any guesses as to solution? Can you recommend anyone for service? I'm located in the Charlotte/Gastonia/Hickory area of NC.Thanks for your help. Keith
