Being new to ThinkPads I decided I’d like to have a USB floppy drive available for the rare occasions when I might need one. Promptly, I scoured eBay and found one at a reasonable price, from a seller in Hong Kong. The drive looked like it would compliment the ThinkPad look, being Black and having an eject button whose shade of Blue was almost the same as that used by IBM.
The drive arrived and was tested, device manager reported that drive was made by Mitsumi (a name very familiar to me) so I was happy enough.
Looking at the base of the unit I found the legends, ASM P/N 27L4226 and FRU P/N 05K9283. A quick search on Google revealed that the FRU code was an IBM part number even though the drive doesn’t bear an IBM logo.
Is this an unbranded IBM part or is someone being dishonest?

My feeling is that as long as it works, you shouldn't need to worry about it. If you google this same subject, you'll see that there are quite a few results where the bottom of the case doesn't match what's inside.
I purchased a USB floppy from newegg ($20) a while ago and so far so good. I still use floppies today while formatting new hard drives and such. Heck, I love floppies!!!
Good luck!

I reckon the drive should be OK, Mitsumi stuff is pretty good.
