How much ram to go for in a T23 ?

#1 Post by Wookie » Tue Feb 19, 2008 7:06 pm

Hi

I have recently bought a T23, it's rather slow due to a 4200 rpm harddisc and only 128Mb ram. I'm running Xubuntu on it (it's never going to have windoze on it, thinking of switching to Kubuntu as a lot of the apps I use need the kde libs) and I am going to upgrade the ram either to 512Mb or 1Gb, my question is ...

Is it really worth splashing a lot more to have 1Gb over 512Mb ?

20quid gets us 2x256Mb sticks while it's closer to 80 for 2x512Mb
Cheers
Wookie

The T23 will support 2 512M PC133 modules for a total of 1 Gigabyte. In linux 512M is fine but 1G will keep it out of the swap file far more especially with a 4200rpm HDD.

Try running Vector SOHO 5.8. It's much faster than 'buntu anything since it's i686 all the way through. You'll really like it, I promise. I it have installed on the T23 I'm using to reply with and it's far superior to what your looking at right now. I'm using an 80G drive at just 5400rpm with an 8M cache, it's quiet and responsive with just 512M installed.

Good Luck!

My Experience

Wookie, I'm a Windows user, making anything I say perhaps irrelevant, but talk is cheap so:

Several weeks ago I obtained a fixer-upper T23, and I recently upgraded from its original (to me) 384K to a full Gig, and swapped out the 4200 RPM drive with a 7200 guy.

My assessment: it turned the machine from something usable to something pleasant.

For XP Pro, both these changes were highly laudable and worth the money. I speak only minimal Linux, and certainly don't run it with any regularity, but a gig isn't that big a deal these days. And a faster hard drive can never be a Bad Thing.

Can you borrow some PC133 from anyone to observe and assess the improvement for a few minutes?
