Thanks for that. I have been reading about Windows 7 with some interest. There are those pundits who, having witnessed the Vista problems, have also noted that Microsoft appears to be speeding up development on Windows 7 (although they deny it). Further, some of the same pundits have suggested that Windows 7 might be available in 2009, and if your XP machine is working well, skip Vista entirely. I don't know, however, I am trying to buy a Vista ThinkPad for myself (and take the risk of moving later to Windows 7). .... JDH

Ahh yes, the Vista upgrade, or keep XP (SP3 now available, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... layLang=en) until the next edition

I'll believe it when I see the software and the hardware to go along with it.

Does anyone REALLY believe Windows 7 will be available in 2009? I would add a couple of years onto that date judging from the Vista delays.

But really now, how many of us are willing to adopt a "Ink" type format when the good old keyboard works so well for us. Sounds like a solution for which there is no real problem.

I'm no a big Microsoft fan, but Vista SP1 works well on all my machines, and I must say my Office 2007 apps run faster on Vista than they did on XP.

I'm also old enough to remember that the early XP had many more shortcomings than the early Vista has exhibited.

I can believe it will be released, but I don't believe it will be "ready". We all know how M$ operates by now.

So Vista is like Windows ME part duex? I'm glad I didn't buy into it.

Not quite - it's much more stable than ME, but just as annoying. Microsoft have found new ways to annoy users without resorting to crashing the OS every now and then.

I'm a big fan of the start menu search (non-cascading menu items, not so much), and a lot of the new features are awesome, but at the same time there is so much that frustrates. Using it on a laptop on which lowest Windows experience score (other than graphics) is 4.8 for memory, I'm capable of making the system entirely unresponsive for three minutes. I think there's some dodgy domain profile going on, but there's no way any OS should virtually lock up on a dual-core machine of this speed, no matter what I ask it to do. Sometimes the UAC stuff takes fifteen seconds to come up... after graying out the screen.

Maybe after SP2 and when hardware of this calibre doesn't cost $2000.

That sort of unresponsiveness is taking entirely too much time. Some of Vista's useless visuals like Aero and Flip and Sidebar might getting in the way.

Have you tried running everything in the "Classic" mode?

On another note...I downloaded the SP3 for XP Pro and installed it on my A31P(2Ghz,2gig ram,5400rpm,ext) .I have found the system slowed down a bit.Everything is just a little slower, not much but can feel a diffrence.
I did another system recovery and sticking with XP Pro with SP2.For now anyway.

@SaberX
Really, thats interesting! Would not have expected a system slow down, wonder if any other SP3 upgraders notice the same decline in performance?

SP3 adds nearly one gig of additional files to the system, including one folder called ServicePackFiles inside Windows. Also the usual $xxx$ deletable files get placed within Windows.

Likely they do not slow the machine down, but they are certainly deletable after you determine that SP3 is running ok.

You might also defrag the system with the added files, the drive may be a bit fragmented.

hmm... I like vista with the ink capabilities, but find xp tablet nearly 90% as good with less than 10% of the hassles of vista. In any case, Im glad to hear that win 7 will use ink almost natively, and I really hope they keep that Complete PC backup feature from business and ultimate. Ill be sticking with my xp pro for a while in any case... if I didnt like the relative stability and easy plug and play abilities, Id probably still be with win 2000 pro! But with XP support through MS until 2014, I think Ill just wait until win 7 to upgrade. Hopefully by then, the x200 line will have a few iterations... including tablets!

Windows 7 will be out in time for me to buy a new laptop with it on it so I can wipe it and put Linux on there.

8)

Hopefully you guys get WinFS and a functional command line.

(Windows Powershell doesn't cut it)

I agree. Also hoping that by the time Windows 7 does eventually roll around, I will be purchasing a new Tablet as well!
Hopefully the timing will coincide nicely!
