X61 T (un)docking issues and general net connectivity issues

#1 Post by jamess » Wed Feb 20, 2008 4:58 pm

For a "long time" everything was fine with my X61 T (except the fan noise when it (fan) shuts down or fires up).

1.) When I undock my computer i either "lose" my screen and can't reconnect to any network afterwards (see problem no.2 below), but what's even more annoying is that when I press the undock button on the dock, it takes ages before it's finally green or good to go, my computer goes to sleep and just a second later, before I undock, wakes up again (with lid closed!!) I've figured that out after a few mishaps when my laptop bag was burning hot (of course the computer was on). I suppose this is wake-on-lan issue. How do i disable it. I want my computer to sleep when I want it to!

2.) I've noticed lately that somehow TV Access Conn. and Vista's own "network" stuff have a problem of some sort. That is if i start computer "fresh" (after complete shut down) it works OK, i get connected to any network etc. But when I put it to say hibernate mode, change location, switch my pc on and hit Fn+F5, I simply can't connect to Wlan or LAN- nothing. I either get no IP or have limited connectivity issues.
Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue?! It's very annoying having to restart my computer after I change location (often!).

Thanks a lot!!

For 1), are you simply pressing the physical "undock" button on the base, and waiting for the green light? Whenever I undock my X61T I first go to Start --> Programs --> ThinkVantage --> EasyEject Utility, and run the program specifically meant to eject the UltraBase. After that the green light comes on of its own accord in about 1-2 sec, really fast. I've never had any problems undocking with that procedure.

For 2), you either have to let Vista manage your connections or A.C., they don't work in conjunction. You can try disabling one or the other; sorry I can't be more helpful than that, maybe another forum member can help.

1.) Thanks will try this procedure.

As for. 2.) I know and have read about the two not working "together", but I never switched windows network to manage my connections. How can I disable this vista thing anyways?

Many thanks

I believe Vista is set as the default wireless network manager; perhaps when you return from hibernate or manually activate A.C. by hitting Fn + F5 you are causing a conflict because A.C. attempts and fails to override the Vista manager. Open up the A.C. configuration by double-clicking on the A.C. icon with the green status bars, under wireless settings click "Find WLAN", and manually connect to the network you wish. I normally use the Vista management because I don't need the extra functionality of A.C. so this may take some more steps than I describe; good luck!

Edit: you can also reference this site, specifically the section on how to allow other software manage wireless connections.

I have posted this time and time again. Access Connections doesn't work. Uninstall it and all the problems magically disappear. Perhaps this is due to some conflict, I don't know. I just know XP and Vista work fine without it.

Hmm, uninstalling it doesn't seem such a good option to me. I like the option of choosing default printer on location and having VPN connect automatically as well as some other stuff A.C. offers. Don't know whether Vista has these options too?

Yes the features of AC are awesome. It just doesn't work! I had to decide if I wanted that convenience or to STAY CONNECTED. I have tried using it on 3 machines, always with connection issues.

I have had the same problem. Sometimes the undock key resulted (after few minutes of blinking) in red!!!, not green light.
I had tried uninstalling A.C., disabling hybrid sleep mode, turning off MS Transient Multi Monitor, uninstalling R&R and turning off Turbo memory. No result.
After restore to factory settings everything looks fine about 2 months, (but, the hybrid sleep, TMM, R&R and Turbo memory I do not use anymore).

I uninstalled AC - let's see how it will work now. If...

Another issue I am afraid. When I hit Fn + Space instead of magnifying the whole screen over whole LCD, I only get same resolution in a smaller box in the middle of the screen?!?! What the heck is this now ?! Any ideas?

Thanks a lot

I just started having similar problems the last week or so. After coming out of sleep or hibernation, wireless connection to internet won't work (even though connection shows active).

Try this:

My Computer > Right Click Properties > Device Manager > Network Adapters > Right click Properties on the network > Power Management > uncheck "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

On another note, are you using Access Connections?

With the man who takes me from my horse, and leads me to a bar."
