Back to the TP

#1 Post by nshore » Thu Feb 21, 2008 2:44 pm

Hello, there! I’ve been reading the ThinkPad post for quite a while, and have now decided to join in. I have recently returned to using my ThinkPad (R51), after using a Macbook for almost two years. I don’t want to start a flame war here—I still like the Macbook, but keep getting drawn back to the ThinkPad. This, I think, is because of a number of factors: the keyboard, the UltraNav, among others.

I used the ThinkPad for two years before going to the Apple, and I have enjoyed the Macbook. It is a great media machine, but for serious work (I do most of my work in MS Office), I prefer the ThinkPad.
Anyone else 'switch back?'

Good to hear you've returned!
I've only become aware of the excellence of Thinkpads last November when I bought my first one!

something tells me that with a subject like this war is doomed... but here are my experiances. I've been using non-thinkpad notebooks before i got my ibook. I switched back to Windows only after 8 months of using OSX. I sold my ibook and got myself a nice ugly T60 which hasn't failed me for a moment in the past 1.5 years.

The R51 is a neat machine. Cool, quiet and with 2 gig of RAM it will even run Vista. Slide in a 7200 rpm hard drive and it's even better!

Yes, the R51 is a rock. My main gripe with the Macbook is the way that MS Office Mac ran on it. I attempted to use Pages, but did not like it; it felt second tier. With the translation Mac Office was slow on occasion, and would occasionally crash. Though Apple touts integration with their applications, the MSOffice/Windows integration cannot be beat.

I have never used Apple much, but a good friend of mine switched back just last week. He grew up using PC, then switched to a Macbook Pro last year and was using it exclusively for about 10 months. But he wasn't happy with several aspects of the Macbook Pro's design, so he sold it and replaced it with a 15.4" 1680x1050 R61.

I've owned four ThinkPads and something like 9 or 10 Macs, and I love them both. In general it takes more than a year to get used to a new operating system; everyone hates a new OS at first because everything is unfamiliar and things you know how to do are suddenly a mystery. I felt that way when OSX came out and I switched from Mac OS9, I hated OSX for more than a year. But now I would never go back to OS9. In five or six years of using OSX I have never once had a system crash. But I can say the same for Windows 2000 and XP.

A lof of it boils down to personal preferences, likes and dislikes. The Mac and the ThinkPad are both great machines, and both operating systems are good, both have their respective flaws. I prefer to use the Mac for some of my work and Windows for other things; each system has its strengths and weaknesses. I wouldn't give up either one, so I keep both and use both of them every day.
