Use external monitor along w/wireless keyboard/mouse.

#1 Post by Phazer » Thu Feb 21, 2008 6:32 pm

Maybe I have too much time on my hands but I was wondering, has anyone used their TP with an external monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse while having the lid switch set to "do nothing" when closed. I guess in the long run, I was looking for someway to surf and such in a comfy chair with my feet kicked up. I know this kinda defeats the purpose of a laptop, but the up-side is, no heat on your lap, use of a full-size keyboard, and your comfy all at the same time. Whaddya think?

It is very much possible. Just get a port replicator for your laptop and you are all set.

OK.....I'm playing stupid. Why would you need a port replicator?

What would be best, (in my case), would to have a swing-a-way recliner table to mount an LCD monitor on and then have the keyboard in my lap, (geesh...am I lazy or what)? Of course the monitor would proabably have to have an extension cable on it, but at least youd only have the two cables and a lightweight keyboard.

Hmmmmmmm.......

I have a 2631 dock setup so I lock it in, and go sit in my comfy chair. If I decide I want to go into another room I just have to undock, rather than unplug a buncha stuff. port replicators and docks are in some senses the epitamy of laziness (so is not spelling).

I totally agree. The Port Replicator/Mini-Dock makes life a lot easier. THe bunch of stuff for me would be: power/audio/DVI(another reason you need it)/USB HDDs/USB Burner. Now one button instead of unplugging all of them..

If you need more than one USB port, you should consider getting a Mini-Dock.

In the old days, before USB, the only way to add a keyboard to the laptop was by using a port replicator or docking station.

Just to remind you young guys.
