Which one is better - T41p or T6x(p)?

Hi All,

Currently I am using T41p & very happy with it.

Now I want to switch to latest T6x(p) model.

Is it a good decision to switch to T6x(p) or shall I just continue using my current T41p?

The basic question is How is T6x(p) compared to T41p in terms of stability? I have seen many issues regarding T6x models (though it is mainly related to Vista).

Also if I buy my laptop here in Japan, can I use the US T6x recovery CD to install the English OS on it?

I've owned many of both the T4x and the T6x series.

The T6x is by far a superior product in terms of engineering and stability.

Every series has lemons, but overall the T6x is one of the best thinkpads ever made (and I personally think the T60 is better than the T61).

Only YOU know if you need a new notebook or not. If you just want to upgrade, by all means go ahead as the T60/T61 are outstanding machines in my opinion.

If all you do is surf and work on office files, I don't really see the need to upgrade unless your current notebook has issues.

I know some people who buy their notebooks like they lease their vehicles: change every two years or so. It's more expensive in the long run but they feel it gives them less headaches.

Is T41p CPU power is sufficient for Editing HDV Movies? Because many of the Video forum members suggest to have Core 2 Duo system for editing HDV Movies.

For editing movies, out of T41p and a T6xp - T6xp is the way to go. Screen is a little brighter (though of the same resolution), the processor has enough horse power, supports upto 4GB memory, and the graphics card is also much nicer.

For video encoding and the like, skip a laptop all together.

Honestly, I do this in my spare time, and absolutely nothing compares to a Quad Core setup. Video editing/encoding is one of the few applications that currently can fully utilize all 4 cores on a quad, and IMHO is worth EVERY LAST PENNY.

Getting off topic, but one interesting thing to note is that the X300 is not significantly smaller in terms of footprint than 14.1" widescreen Thinkpads:

X300: ~3.3 lb, 31.5 x 23.1 x 1.85-2.34 cm (12.4" x 9.1" x 0.73"-0.92")
Z61t: ~5 lb, 33.4 x 22.8 x 2.66-3.09 cm (13.1" x 9.0" x 1.05"-1.22")
T61: ~5.1 lb, 33.5 x 23.7 x 2.76-3.19 cm (13.2" x 9.3" x 1.09"-1.26")

I've seen such in the pictures, however from carrying my T41p around all day I'd like a half compromise between the X300 and the T61's successor. Hard drive space is important to me. I was just wandering if anyone could recall the rumours about T400 and T500s if there was going to be a T300 presumably with the same screen as the X300.

Ah, I see. So in other words you'd be looking for something a bit heavier (but not by much), possibly thicker, with a speedier CPU and a preferably 2.5" hard drive? A machine like that would make a lot of sense to me, but personally I haven't heard anything about one. (Then again, a month ago I was saying that we wouldn't see the X300 for months, so what do I know )

Precisely qviri. You hit the nail right on the head there. I'm encouraged that people think the T6x are built better, but worried that the battery life is dismal on the Santa Rosa T61s... seriously poor.

With my T41p, and it's aged battery I get 4-5 hours without trying (9-cell extended) although I heard someone mention that they've finally decided to bring out a 9-cell extended for the T61 14.1''.
