Combo drive eject problem

#1 Post by GZheng12 » Wed Dec 01, 2004 9:34 am

I recently bought a T42 2378 FVU. Last night after watching DVD for 2 hours, I pressed the eject button many times but the drive did not respond, after rebooting the PC, everything is OK. I wonder is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Thanks.

Mine has done this a couple times now... annoying but the paperclip still works ;-)

I have not checked for any firmware updates, but it'd be nice if this freeze was resolved....

Yeah, this happened to me with my new 23736vu. Called IBM and they told me to reboot. I did the firmware update just yesterday so I can't say whether it's fixed (the summary of changes only said "(Fix) Version 1.72 for UJDA755y (KME/PCC) ."

I had the same problem after a few months with my drive (also a DVD-ROM/CDRW on a 2378-FVU). I called up IBM and they sent me a new drive as a replacement.

Ditto. Had the same problem. IBM had me download a bios update, and a "CD Easy Eject" utility and it solved the problem.

I see a new firmware update on the IBM site that is VERY recent (11/19):

Release 8
Eight diskette image files

* (Fix) Version 1.72 for UJDA755y (KME/PCC)
* (Fix) Version 1.22 for UJDA755z (KME/PCC)

But.......... I only see FDD image files? What's with that? How does one get a set of files that work without a floppy drive being required? I'm new to the IBM d/l site, so if I need to rtfm I apologize, but I cannot find a non-FDD update tool on their site.... TIA for any pointers.

^^^^^^^^^___________ Point of clarification for the above:

The UJDA755 device mentioned in the info. above is the CD-RW/DVDROM combo unit. If you have the DVD-RAM Multiburner unit (UJ812) you want to see the IBM page here:

I figured out how to do some of the firmware updates using a USB flash drive but this one, while possible (there's a prior post about it), made me just go out & buy a USB floppy drive. Got tired of the machinations. Worked rather simply after that. I got the "Sony 2X External USB Floppy Drive - MPF88E/UA/181" with amazon.com having the best price when I checked. Rather slow & noisy but it worked!

My DVD/CD-R combo ID

#10 Post by GZheng12 » Wed Dec 01, 2004 11:03 pm

My combo drive's ID is "HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4242N". I also checked the new firmware update, there is no one from 8 options fit my combo's ID.

yeah, my 2 week old T42 (2373K5H) also have this flaky CDRW refusing to eject when pressing the blue eject button...

i've tried 1 workaround that SEEMS ok so far--use the Keyboard Customizer Utility to manually assign a keyboard hotkey to eject the CDRW tray...

seems to work well--but then again, i've only used this workaround for 1 week...

Oddly enough, I was fed up with this issue and was going to IBM but i found out if a CD rejected to eject when pushing the button I right clicked the drive in My Computer and selected the "Use with DLA" item(which is something with IBM RecordNow - Sonic Software that is bundled with the computer) after i select it the drive becomes ejectable. I guess this may be a workaround, let me know if its just me or if it works for you.

I had the same drive and experienced the same problems. Check out this thread...

Combo drive eject problem (continued)

#15 Post by GZheng12 » Mon Mar 07, 2005 5:06 pm

I finally fixed this problem rather than asking for a replacement drive. I just installed a small software called CD Eject Tool 2.6.
(http://www.topshareware.com/CD-Eject-To ... -10436.htm)

Everytime I click the small CD icon in my system tray to eject CD-rom and it never fails. I believe the original problem is caused by the firmware. It does not seem hardware problem.

Welcome your ideas about this issue.

Yigo

I know it is a software issue.
I had this problem, so i just formatted and put my own version of XP Pro on my pc using the OEM key on the bottom of the computer and it worked fine ever since.

The fix is easy. Go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall DLA.

That's it. Problem solved.
