Vista fn+f5 functionality (only turns on/off bluetooth)

#1 Post by TimC » Fri Feb 22, 2008 6:02 pm

Hey all, ever since I installed Vista, fn+f5 only toggles the bluetooth radio, it does not pop up the traditional fn+f5 menu. I am wondering if anyone has found a way to change it back to the traditional fn+f5 menu.

Much thanks!

Try reinstalling the HotKey driver? Vista and XP use different drivers.

I have exactly the same problems as the original poster.

Exept with me the problems actually only came after I installed SP1.

Before that I had everything working (all the Black popup windows on the F-Key's)

After installing SP1 a lot of other software was 'reset' and so were a lot of my settings.

I already tried installing and uninstalling all sorts of drivers and tools, but I think it boils down to the hot key driver not working.

If you don't have SP1 installed it is possible to get everything working, but just like with XP the order in which you install everything is very important, but not very clear.

I believe fn+f5 won't work because of how Vista controls the Wifi power. Vista blocks the code that fn+f5 gives to turn off wifi. Reinstalling drivers and software won't work. It is just how vista is set up to control your computer's power. Only having a dedicated switch seems to be the only way to turn off wifi without going through a bunch of menus in Vista.
I have finally rejoined the dark side.

I'm sitting here in a nice warm bathtub with my Vista SP1 T42, and can attest that FN-F5 is toggling the wireless (Atheros) just fine.

With my original Intel mini-PCI card, once I went to the original Vista (Ultimate) Fn-F5 stopped working, and upon posting here about that behavior it was suggested I swap out for an Atheros card. That was a great recommendation, and the only "downside" is that the bootup display now shows "Intel" rather than "Centrino". We'll live!

Hey, as long as I'm babbling, let me naively ask why folks have Bluetooth in their PCs. (Mine doesn't) is it to communicate with a cellular phone, or what? Sorry to seem so ignorant; this is something completely unfamiliar.

Well, I primarily use the Bluetooth facilities in my ThinkPads for:
  • Connecting a mouse (& keyboard) without a cord or a dongle

Connecting a headset without a cord or a dongle

Typing full text SMS message quickly into my phone without a cord or a dongle

Backing up/restoring my mobile phone SIM contents (basically, my address book) without a cord or a dongle
Cheers,

Bill
