Clean Install of XP and Bluetooth

Hello, comp specs are in the sig.

I just did a clean install of XP on a new hard drive. I still have my old hard drive with the factory installed XP on it, so if needed, I can pull stuff from there.

I was following the Clean XP Install guide (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=188992) and I got to the Bluetooth part. It said that I need to hit Fn+F5 to turn on the Bluetooth. I did that and nothing popped up. So I decided to install it anyways. I go to Control Panel and click on Bluetooth Configuration, and i get a "Bluetooth Device not found"

I looked around the forum, and I came across this post regarding Bluetooth and Vista (http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=201450)

It seems to require that AccessConnections is installed before installing Bluetooth. So I uninstalled Bluetooth and reinstalled with the AccessConnections and then the Bluetooth. If I press Fn+F5, still nothing.

I noticed from my factory disk that if I press Fn+F5, an AcFnF5.exe launches. I searched for this and found it in C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\ConnectUtilities.

I ran AcFnF5.exe manually and on the factory disk it showed both the Wireless device and the Bluetooth, but on the clean install of XP, it showed only the Wireless device, not the Bluetooth.

Also, I do have the Hotkey app installed.

Any help on getting Bluetooth working would be appreciated. Thanks

Where have you obtained the XP factory install on your old hard drive. From the Thinkpad recovery partition, or from XP Product Recovery CDs?

If it is from one of these, can you not create a clean (or optimized) install by first doing an XP recovery install, and then customizing it to your liking. This may help avoid difficulties, and also maintain a working XP install.

I have the Thinkpad recovery partition on a separate drive. How would I create an optimized install from the recovery partition on the separate drive and transfer it to my current drive?

1) Using your old drive, you could burn a set of XP Product Recovery disks, and then install these on your new drive.

2) Alternatively, you could use Acronis True Image software, and clone your old drive (make an exact copy) onto your new drive.

Then you could do a new install of XP on your new drive using the recovery partition, and optimze this new XP install as you wish.

As you'd mentioned, you would want to retain your existing working drive, while setting up your new drive.

How do I ensure that as little as the factory installed crap gets onto the new XP?

1) Use Add/Remove Programs to delete any unwanted software appearing in the list.

2) There is a Base Software Administrator tool (either within the recovery software itself, or otherwise available at the link below):

that may also assist when doing a customized install.

3) There may be other apps where there is no uninstall option, as well as processes that could be manually disabled. No doubt others in the forum have done a similar customized XP factory install on the T61p, and can offer assistance.

Again, the advantage of using the product recovery installation is you retain a working T61p while removing software and processes, versus starting from a generic XP and installing all the drivers and hoping there are no issues or conflicts.
