t42 failing to boot up?

#1 Post by jacksonheights » Mon Feb 25, 2008 8:27 am

Hi all,

my t42 which i've had since dec 2004 has suddenly started having weird boot up problems. After it has been shut down (or goes into hibernation), it intermittently fails to boot up.

Every time I push the power button, the power indicator comes on, I can hear the fan and harddrive spinning, but nothing else happens. screen stays blank. If I push the power button again, it powers down really quickly too (instead of taking like 4secs).

I thought it was some weird standby/hibernation glitch so I tried holding the fn-f4 and powering up and for some reason it then booted up. This has worked a couple of times but is not consistent either. it was probably total coincidence.

any ideas? thanks.

When the T42 does work do you experience lockups and screen freezes?

Doesn't sound like the dreaded GPU loose error.

Could still be the motherboard with some other type of malfuction.

Could you try a different operating system maybe a live linux CD to see if the problem continues?

I had a feeling it might be the MB. I'll try a linux boot disc to see if the problem occurs then too.

I'm afraid to turn off my computer now for fear it will never turn back on!
