Hi, I just installed XP Pro over 98SE on my 600X. All seemed to go well until I started downloading updates from Microsoft. At one point the system had to be rebooted, and that's when the trouble became evident.
It goes into chkdsk and reports a cross-reference error and hangs. The only way I can turn the PC off is to unplug it. If I skip chkdsk, it goes into a reboot loop.
If I press F8 and select "last configuration" (not sure if this is the wording) it exhibits the same behavior.
If I press F8 and select safe mode, it displays a list of drivers that I guess it is skipping, then hangs. Here too. the only way to stop it is to unplug it.
Before I did the upgrade, I ran scandisk and defragged the hard drive without problems.
I have at my disposal a bootable 98SE CD that also contains some DOS utilities, a Puppy Linux live CD, and a [censored] Small Linux live CD. The file system is still FAT32. Is there anything I can do with any of the DOS or Linux utilities to recover? At this point I'd just like to rollback to 98SE if that is possible.
Thanks in advance,
Sara
