8611 Error on 600X

#1 Post by jrjain » Thu Dec 02, 2004 3:07 am

Hello,

I have an 8611 error with my 600x. I disconnected and reconnected the keyboard cables, as well as swabbed the connections with rubbing alcohol. My clock has been on time consistently, so I don’t think the bios battery is failing. My only conclusion is that the keyboard needs to be replaced. Can someone kindly suggest another potential cause of the problem? At worst, do you happen to know where I can find good, inexpensive keyboards if this is the problem? Many, many thanks.

Can't help with the error code, but as usual, the replacement parts are usually easy to find on ebay. caveat emptor.

Here are two links just for your info. I do not know, have done business with, nor represent these two auctions, just passing on a couple of links.

The 8611 error has to do with a failing trackpoint/keyboard. Upon the trackpoint being touched, the mouse behaves uncontrollably. After installed all of the relevant IBM driver updates and the like, the machine started booting up with the 8611 error. Sometimes, it will boot properly after sitting in the off state for several minutes/hours. The behavior is entirely unpredictable and, hence, impractical.

I can only now guess, but is the ribbon cable broken at some point, where the conductor(s) is/are making contact on occasion? I broke the speaker cable on my 600X one time and the cable etc looked good, but the internals of the ribbon cable were wacked, or so it seemed.

I am sorry I cannot offer any better suggestions or help. :-(

I bought a 600 series keyboard from a local repair shop for $50. It looked like it was new. You might try your local repair shop, or call mine... www.quecomputers.com
