tp 570 and ata-6

can a hard disk with ata-6, work on this laptopl?
I want to buy HD with 60gb and 7200rpm that has ata-6.

I'm going to go out on a limb here... based on my experience with DESKTOP computers (but I am learning that notebooks are a different breed!

)

The system will run at the "least common denominator"... in other words, an ATA-3 drive with an ATA-5 board will run at ATA-3. An ATA-6 drive with an ATA-4 board will run at ATA-4.

So, IMO, that ATA-6 drive you have will work... it probably won't run at the full "speed" of ATA-6. I do think you will need partitioning software or a BIOS overlay to handle the large 60GB size, however.

I'm running linux, so the size of the hard disk doesn't matter.
I'm running my media server pentium 100 with 200gb western digital

Linux handle the drives in the kernel, and not thru the bios.

No, the 570 and 570E can handle hard drives up to a size of at least 80GB without any problems. I have such hard drives in them and they work just fine.

Do you have fast hard drive? 5400 or 7200?
If yes, do you feel the change in speed?

Nope, because I wanted to have a whisper-quiet system. On my machines, the fan almost never runs, and I didn't want to ruin the silence with a loud drive. Therefore I took the IBM/HitachiGST TravelStar 80GN with 80GB, 4200rpm and 8MB Cache.

Well, as stated above, it's still a 4200rpm drive. The TravelStar 80GN replaced the IBM TravelStar 40GN with 40GB and 2MB cache. Head movements are much more quiet and because of the increased cache and areal density, the drive actually appears to be much faster, even though it's still a 4200rpm drive (haven't tried to measure the performance gains, though).

If you don't care much about noise, a 5400 or 7200rpm drive like the TravelStars 5k80 or 7k60 may be just right for you. If you're interested in a big, fast and quiet drive, you should definitely take a look at the brand-new TravelStar 5k100. It is reported to combine the low noise levels of the 80GN with the high performance of the 7k60. You can find a link to a review of this drive in this thread:
