SSD for my T61 (pic)

Hello,

I'm seriously considering replacing my T61 7200 RPM harddrive with SSD i just don't know wither it will work or not and which brand is best and where to buy from capacity should be at least 64 Gig or more and will i notice performance increase and more battery life? need your advice please thanks.

well their should be a performance increase because there are no 7200RPM (laptop) drives that can push 100MB/s but the SSD will That is of-course crazy cost but if you are rich and money is no problem then get the MTRON ones, anyone dreaming about a SSD gets all warm inside when they think of MTRON ones. There are some Samsung ones too that get close to the MTRON but MTRON is deifnitely the ultimate wet dream (64GB is expensive tho, probably $2,000) A Samsung 64GB is probably decently priced:

So after going over those you'll get some sweet performance!!

Battery life is gains are possible but i wouldn't expect an extra 2hrs or so, maybe 1hr max (which is plenty if you ask me ) The 7200RPM drives suck up to 3.5W when writting and lower at 2.x when just idle. A SSD will be like .7w idle and 1.5-2.5w in use. Since the work will get done faster with a SSD then you can say there's some benefit there too since it'll use less power to complete the same task.

NOTE - 80MB/s limit is present because of the "issue" with the Intel ICH8 chipset and SSD cards

Ok, I now have the latest 64GBytes Memoright GT Series SSD. According to the vendor it is 120MByte read and write.
I did a lot of tests and decided to use it as system drive.

When I run HD Tach benchmark on my T60p, I get 90MBytes/s average transfer rate.

Startup, well I have one of these year old windows xp installations with tons of programs installed. With my 200GB 7K200 it normally takes more than a minute to startup. With the SSD, it goes down to about 25 seconds .

Program startup times are non existent any more. The machine feels lightning fast.

I tried to use it in the Ultrabay for my VMWare, but the difference to the 7K200 is not that much in the UltraBay. Dont take me wrong, vmware startup and program loads are still much faster, but when I do my day to day work with ETL processes, I do not get much performance benefit. Perhaps I need some more tuning here, but the limit seems to be also the PATA interface or chipset implementation. HDTach gives me only 70MBytes/s on the Ultrabay.
