Advice needed on buying a T61p - scared of BSOD/3D issues

#1 Post by dingo » Thu Feb 28, 2008 7:20 am

First of all.. I am new here to the forum so Hi to all.

I was about to buy T61p...BUT....I have been reading avidly the thread on the T61p and BSOD/3D graphics issue on here and in the official Lenovo forums. I was recommended the T61p through a tech friend but have been put off by all the crash talk (I WILL be running games on my system)

Can anybody alay my fears of buying a 'lemon' or point me to a better Thinkpad model? I really consider myself as a noob when it comes to computers.

Does the T9500 chipset exhibit the same problems as the 7500/7700's?

The system in my cart is:

T61P
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor T9500 (2.6GHz 800MHz 6MBL2)
Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium
15.4 WUXGA TFT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M (256MB Open GL)
4 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM)
200GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm with Disk Encryption

Any help would be greatfully accepted!! :D

Go for it. Getting a 'lemon' is always a rare event. You can only see people who have problems with their machines on a support forum like this, but you won't see those happy owners. They are the majority.
Core 2 Duo T7600, 3GB DDR2-667 RAM, Main 7K320 320GB 7200RPM + Ultrabay 320GB 5400RPM, ATI FireGL V5250, 15" IPS UXGA, DVDRW, Bluetooth, Atheros ABGN, NMB Keyboard, Fingerprint, Win7 Pro X86 + Vista 64-bit SP2, Advanced Dock.

Still I am interested to know how many 'happy' customers there are out there....... as crazyfrog suggested you only hear the bad stuff on the forums and not so much the good stuff....

anybody else tickled with joy over their T61p purchase?

I bought my T61p during the Christmas sale. I am very happy with it. Always had Dell before. I like this better.

T61p T9300 3GB RAM WINXP PRO 160GB 7200rpm HDD NV 570M 256MB GPU

Received 2/21, plays Bioshock & COD4 flawlessly, won't play Silent Hill 2 ( game not designed for dual channel I *think* ). It's awesome. No issues whatsoever.

Got mine during the Christmas sale, too, and no big problems so far. Just a warning that Kasperksy at default settings will prevent hibernation, and I think that hibernation in Vista is a very poor design.

If the problem was widespread the forums will be inundated with one new problem post every 5 mins :p. seriously.

For the record mine works flawlessly...overclocks like a champ too while temps are pretty much in check. I do play 3d games on it so this thing is pushed hard. And all this on Vista x64 too.

Agree with the previous poster. Only nag I have with Vista is hibernation is somewhat quirky on Vista. Works most of the time but the odd time it won't.

As to the T9500 I think its a waste of money for the extra .1 Ghz, better off going T9300.

Hey, I'm running Kaspersky IS 7, I only occasionally have trouble with Vista Hibernation. Because it has only happened a couple of times, I haven't yet looked into it seriously. I'm curious what default setting you tweaked in Kaspersky please?

If you order from Lenovo, you can return your machine within 30 days, no questions asked.

At least that was what the sales rep told me.

But I believe they now charge a restocking fee, even for returns within that period, which is unfortunate, to put it mildly.

This policy is effective in Canada only, I believe.
