64-bit users: How do you browse w/x64 without x64 plug-in's?

#1 Post by Crunch » Thu Feb 28, 2008 7:52 am

Internet Explorer 7 in 64-bit mode: Awesome! Minefield, otherwise known as Firefox 3 Beta 3, the only x64 Firefox browser currently available. Incredible...BUT! There are no Flash/Shockwave, amongst others, 64-bit plug-in's available, so I am forced to use FF2 x86, as well as IE7 x86, and I don't understand how anybody browses without, at a minimum, the Adobe Flash Player plug-in.

Most sites that I frequent require the Adobe Flash player, some do the Shockwave, too. I watch a lot of CNN and NBC News, and both of those, amongst many others, require the Flash player. Is anyone aware of beta plug-in's, or an ETA as to when they'll be released? Is there any other (temporary) solution that I am unaware of.

Thx all! ;)

I have the same problem. I guess we have to continue using the x86 IE7 or FF in order to browse normally.

Could you share the link to the 64-bit firefox 3? I can't seem to find an official 64-bit release. I have been meaning to make my own build but that is on the back burner atm.

Personally, the lack of 64-bit plugins does not bother me. I like my web lean and fast.

First I'll start off by saying flash is overrated.

Second,

Code: Select all

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.8.1.12) Gecko/20080208 Fedora/2.0.0.12-1.fc8 Firefox/2.0.0.12
Oh yea 64 bit.

I can still view the occasional flash page thanks to npviewer.bin and nspluginwrapper which allows me to use any 32 bit plugins.

Adobe has announced at some point they are working on 64 bit plugins for both Linux and Windows.

For now we'll just have to wait. :(

Is it me, or have you guys experienced a slight (or more noticeable) difference in performance using an x86 browser under Vista x64? It appears to me that everything (including x86 apps) respond seemingly instantaneously, especially, of course, x64 ones.

Home Server x64 should be interesting...Anyone got an ETA for that baby? 8)

Performance seems to be around the same in 32 and 64 bit Vista for me, when I was using it.
