Limited write life of SSD
Is this something you'd be concerned about with the X300?
Re: Limited write life of SSD
oh when are people gonna move on and forget about this? SSDs can last up to 140yrsjacksonheights wrote:Is this something you'd be concerned about with the X300?
SSDs use better chips or SLC (instead of MLC as standard flash) which are more expensive but they also last longer plus with wear leveling technology in all SSDs these days, the same cell never gets written to over and over again. Even if you copy and paste the same file over and over again.

Very simple way to think about this. Wear leveling makes sure all the sectors are written evenly. The flash lasts more than 100,000 rewrites. To make the whole drive go through one cycle, you have to write 64gb. So you have to write 64gb 100,000 times to wear the thing out. The thing writes at a speed of 80MB/s. How long will it take to write 64GB, 100,000 times, at 80MB/s? I've calculated 25 years. And that's if your *trying* to wear it out, as opposed to the few megs per day you might usually write.
i write/rewrite/format 8GB compactflash cards in my camera multiple times every day and have yet to see a single failure, error, or other anomaly. some of my cards are three years old and still see heavy use.
flash memory is reliable, period. you're likely to sell or retire the X300 long before this so-called 'finite' life of the SSD has been reached.
