Wifi in T40

#1 Post by Szelek » Thu Feb 28, 2008 11:08 am

First I should say "hello everybody", I'm new on the forum.
Secondly I should ask a question :D
So, recently I have bought ThinkPad T40 2373-1U1 and after reading alot about WiFi stuff I planned to buy some miniPci Wifi card. But i just can't find any information about which card will suit my T40. I realy don't want to have fun with all this 1802 error and flashing bios, I just want to buy some "plug and have fun" wifi card amd enjoy wireless internet. So please tell me which card I should buy.
Thanks

If the T40 doesn't come with one get a IBM branded wifi card made for the T4x series. You can find them here in the marketplace or on eBay.

Does any IBM branded card will work with my model? Des Wifi led and Fn+F5 will work? I've read somewhere about problems running even IBM wifi cards.

If it's a IBM card for the T4x series it will work and as long as you have the proper IBM software you will get full functionality.

Which card will be the best for my laptop? Atheros, Intel or something else?
For example from this site http://stores.ebay.pl/justopeshop_W0QQf ... 4165QQtZkm

The Intel ones would do just fine.

Is there some site where are listed all FRU numbers for IBM wifi cards? I live in Poland and to get something like genuine IBM card is really hard, so it's important to me to buy a working card for the first time.

Make sure your computer is "WiFi ready" (ie comes with antenna). If not, it's not a simple upgrade to add the antenna - just get a PCMCIA card. Also, internal cards for the T43 generally will not work properly with the T40 (I tried it: Fn F5 didn't work properly and it was very confusing trying to find the correct driver). As the card numbers keep changing, I'd make sure the one you buy says "for T41 and T42" and not just "T43".

Edit: You should find the information you need on the IBM/Lenovo support site.

Thanks for the support. I've bought an Intel 2915 a/b/g card. And it works great. Also Fn+F5 combination works and the WiFi LED. :D

Is that a genuine IBM card? If not, could you post the Spares No found on the card? It's not a serial number so don't worry.

I'm trying to track down, with which unauthorized 2915ABG cards the WiFi LED works and with which it doesn't (there have been reports of both, I have one that doesn't).

Guy who was selling this card on e-bay said it's genuine IBM card, and it looks as such (wifi led works)
