t42p won't recognize hdd

#1 Post by cdbsr00 » Thu Feb 28, 2008 1:29 pm

I have 3 t42p's that will not recognize any hdd. I've checked the options in the bios, even tried the f12 key to see if the computer will see the hdd. No luck either way. anyone else have this problem?

3 different thinkpads that do the same thing with more than one disk ????? . Seems REALLY strange.

I'd look for something common that you may be doing wrong in all
the cases, such as trying the disks *without* the enclosure/frame so that the pins do not align/connect properly to the connector, or that you a defective drive, or maybe an incompatible drive (would be the first one I see) for which you have more than one unit,...

What exact error you see at boot ? could it be that the disk is recognoized but what is missing is the master boot record ?

No i have hdd caddys for all three. I have more than enough hdd's to eliminate them as the problem, even have and IBM hdd as well. What i did notice is that the hdd isn't getting power for some reason. The one that i'm working on has worked before. It was put away for 4 weeks.

I'm not getting any errors . . . just no power to the hdd. As i said the hdd isn't even showing up when i press f12.

Bare with me here, i'm new to dealing with IBM's period.

Hi,

I'd bet the drives are not connecting correctly to the thinpad... either not pushing them enough, bent pins or the caddys are not correcltly set up.. can you verify this somehow ? maybe trying in the ultrabay if you have the adapter or something alike..

When the drive slides in, the electronics have to be up. (printing down) The easiest way to get the caddy aligned correctly is to open the lid and turn the machine over (open lid pointing down). Then slide the caddy in.

I have the drives positioned correctly even assembled the entire caddy with the hdd just to be anal about the whole thing and still nothing. None of the pins are bent or missing, every drive i've tried slides in with no problem. I'm going to try the usb option and attempt to format it that way. Is there anywhere i need to go to give you guys any info that could narrow down what the problem maybe?

Just thought I would throw this in, as I made this mistake. Are you using a 15" hdd caddy? If the t42p's are 15 inch models, the hard drive has to slide in that extra inch.

There is no difference between caddies for 14" and 15" models, period. The plastic cover is different but that's it.
