X31 - Firewire in every model?

#1 Post by ammar » Thu Feb 28, 2008 2:43 pm

Is there a firewire connector in every model?
Is there an ATI card in every model?

I'm shopping for a used unit, need to know if I should ask the seller about these things.

Is it difficult to perform an upgrade to bluetooth and to update the wireless card or is there only one slot?

Should I go for ATI and higher MHz or does it drastically drains the battery?

TIA

There is firewire on all.

There is ATI graphics card on all.

Bluetooth is not on all, but is easily added. bluetooth antenna will also need to be added.

Wireless is via a mini-pci slot accessible by removing the keyboard, tall X31 have antennas already.

Bluetooth and wireless are in different slots and you can have both.

Bluetooth is part of the modem (of all things) on the X31, so the modem will be replaced if you add bluetooth.

An addendum on wireless/bluetooth, there are some machines that have the antennae installed but no cards. These are preferable as installing antennae is probably the single biggest piece of work in upgrading a machine,

The easiest way to tell a machine with antennae is to look for a pair of little protuberances near the top of the LCD that are used to anchor the antennae. While there are 2 antenna in the lid for the wireless card (a main antennae and an aux antennae), one can be used for bluetooth.

The X31 has a wireless card whitelist and using a card not on this list prevents a boot. There are several hacks that can be used to circumvent this that can be found at this link.
