T42 No sound

I have a T42 and all of a sudden the sound has gone on it. System sounds still work but nothing out of the speakers. When I plug in headphones I get a whining sound. Any suggestions?

There may be a few different issues that would give similar results here...to see whether the problem is software or hardware related, I' suggest you borrow or download a copy of Linux "live" CD and boot from it. If there's still no sound, you have a hardware problem. If there is, your answer is a corrupt driver or Windows file.

I have very limited knowledge of linux. I booted a type of linux called ubuntu from cd and still no sound although everything I have looked at has said that it is working properly. From this I can assume it is hardware?
